Is this even an RPG?
Does leveling matter?

Do skill points matter?

Does gear matter?

Or is it all surface level window dressing?

Not really , its a cheap mobile game that tries to imitate God of WAR , failed spectacularly and ends up with writings that made erotic visual novels on the steam front store look like literatures.
It's not, Its an action-adventure game, they should have removed the dragon age tag and avoided a lot of drama.

It definitely matters, gear and skill points offer you a lot more tools to deal with combat as the game advances, I'd argue far more than Inquisition did, but the game does scale pretty linearly as you progress so you're probably not going to be ridiculously overpowered at any point. It's not a heavy RPG, there are RPG elements but the game is focused more on the action. I'd argue combat progression is much more in-line with Mass Effect.

I believe leveling may matter. I am only level 17 and have run into higher level monsters that just stomped me.

I also believe skill points matter as they get you some decent passives and are required to reach the class specializations, unlocking more powerful abilities

Again, I would say yes. I found heavy armor that when upgraded gives me bonus fire damage. As a warrior planning to take the champion specialty class, fire damage increases should help me.

But again, I am only level 17 so there is a long way to go.

The weakest RPG aspects are the dialog options.

Apparently this game has level matching enemies so no, it doesn't matter.

You get skills every level. The skills trees are great. There are all kinds of active skills and passives with special effects. Some even add new combos. All skill nodes gives stats and gear has stats bonus too. So damage is maths. You wont get base attributes to increase every level but some skills nodes will give you the same result. There's nothing revolutionary about it, but levelling is fun.

People really talking our their ass in this thread. Yes, it matters. There are three sub classes for each class that you have to build toward and the fights get pretty challenging. Gear can be upgraded, abilities can be synergized and weakness damage is important. For the record, if someones profile doesn't show that they own the game, ignore them.

Does gear seriously auto equip when you loot?

Its an RPG in the same sense that Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur, and Fable are RPGs.

Maybe if you don't have anything in that slot but even then I am not sure. Whenever I loot gear I get a comparison screen and can choose to equip the item or not.

Ok, that makes more sense. I read a tweet from a guy praising how convenient the game was. He said you auto equip gear when you loot it from chests but I guess he meant early on when you have no gear yet. Odd thing to call out.
