DirectX Error, PLEASE HELP!
As the title says, I am having this error code, and I cannot seem to fix it no matter what I have tried. I can load the game, I can do the character customization, and the intro. However, when I get into the Eleven Forest, and I have to shoot the Ballista at the wall, the moment I fire it the game freezes, and I get the DirectX error.

DirectX function "GetDeviceRemovedReason ("failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG (" The GPU will not respond to more commands"). GPU: "Intel(R) Arc(TM) A550M Graphics" , Driver: 32.0.101.6078. This error is usually caused by the graphics driver crashing; try installing the latest drivers. GPUBreadcrumbs:

I have looked through Reddit, EA Forums, Youtube, etc.. and I cannot seem to find anyone with this exact issue. Other people who have had a similar DirectX error, cannot start the game, or get past character creation. I have already tried multiple solutions such as, updating the BIOS, verifying the files, uninstalling and reinstalling, adjusting the graphics to the lowest setting in game, I made sure all my drivers were up to date, as well as my windows. I even removed BG3 and all mods related as well as other games, as that was an issue for others. I am at my wits end, and I just want to know if anyone can help, or has experienced this issue as well.

While I understand not a lot of people enjoy the game, and I respect that. I personally would like to give it a chance, to form my own opinion, so unless you have any advice as to help with the error, no reason to comment.

I have this error so arbitrarily I can go either two hours or four without it triggering and I’ve had it trigger in the cc, in game, after a cutscene, and just walking around. There’s no particular spot or action that makes it happen, and yes there are plenty of people having the issue.

No idea how to solve it yet either. Waiting on a patch and until then, just restarting the game fixes it for a while. Like I said I can go as long as four hours or so before it triggers. I’ve been using it as a sign I should take a break lol.

To respond to Maiafay, I am not sure which would be more annoying, having it just happen in random spots, or my problem with the stupid Ballista. It is so strange, and after everything I have done, nothing helps. That specific point is where it all goes to crap. It is a shame that this is happening to people, I know a lot of people myself included have waited to long to play it. I hope a fix happens soon.

Dexaldem, I have no idea lol, but I appreciate you bumping it up! Thank you!

I had the same error with a Geforce RTX 3600 Ti. I reinstalled the newest drivers, deleted the content of the shader_cache folder in the game directory and applied gfx settings recommended by digital foundry for 8GB RAM cards. After that the crash didn't occur again and I played for like 10 hours.

The folder in question can be found like this:
Yourdrivehere\Steam\steamapps\common\Dragon Age The Veilguard\shader_cache

The Digital Foundry settings can be found here:

Hope it helps, even though you are using an Intel GFX card apparently.

This had helped me after I nearly lost my mind trying to find a way around the gpu hang.

Update your mobo bios, if you have an intel 13th or 14th gen cpu even though the error states it's GPU bound it's CPU caused.

GPU: "Intel(R) Arc(TM) A550M Graphics"
This graphics processor is not enough.

I have not found a fix unfortunately. Watched some videos saying to clear shader cache folder, enable debug mode in Nvidia control panel, etc. Nothing has worked.

I had a similar error pop up. Game played fine the first evening, then would launch, go full-screen black, and then give me that popup error. Tried clearing caches, deleting shader files, driver update, full driver re-install, etc. Nothing worked and I had to do a full restart to get the game to fully quit.

Turns out it was easily solved when I realized my monitor cables weren't plugged directly into the GPU. So try that instead of the MB I/O?

I too am plagued by this error. Happens randomly every 1-4 hours as well. Tried pretty much every single "solution" on this forum and still no dice, the error always happens. Apparently the devs are aware, though, so should hopefully be addressed.

Then again, this is Bioware, which is known for saying bugs are unfix-able only to have the community fix things in a mod lol (this happened multiple times on DA:O and DA2 if I remember right). Let's hope this new gen of devs there, pretty sure none of the crew from Bioware are around outside a select few, are better bug fixers lol.

My specs are:
  • RTX 4070 TI Super
  • i9 12900K (So not 13th or 14th gen for those "fixes" to apply)
  • 64 GB RAM
  • Installed on an M2 SSD
  • On latest drivers

As you can see, I am well above their recommended specs and do have buttery smooth performance until the crashes with all settings maxed (tried adjusting the settings all over the place, but still no dice)
This is a major damn issue, I'm enjoying the game despite its reputation and some criticisms of my own, but this is killing my drive to play it at all.

Although not quite the looker, turning off ’Strand Hair’ in the graphics settings appears to have addressed crashes for me.

Tried that, was still happening for me at least.

This is still happening to me no matter how many fixes people recommend. I'm at a loss here and it's affecting my enjoyment of the game. I hope Bioware fix this horrible bug
