This is not an RPG, it's an ARPG.
From everything I have seen and I have scoured through countless reviews either glowing, scathing, and mixed, this game is essentially God of War 2018/Ragnarok but with dialogue and story choices.

You play more or less a set character, your companions function the exact same way Atreus and companions did in Ragnarok, and your combat moveset, abilities and skill tree are very reminiscent of Rangarok.

There are choices you can make in the story, and the final mission has been likened to, surprisingly, a better version of the ME2 suicide mission with all the consequences and ramifications you can expect from that. (Even the extremely scathing reviews said this) Unfortunately it seems that ALOT of the story choice/consequences are relegated to that last mission or last couple of missions.

It is a heavily set-piece driven action RPG, with a bit more roleplay choice than a game like God of War but nowhere near what you might want from a TRUE RPG. And you'll be disappointed if that's what you wanted out of your Dragon Age game.

I'm not sure how many people WANTED God of War with more customisation/RPG flavor, but taken for what it is it seems to be competent.

From what I can gather alot of the mixed opinions on this are from people who wanted an RPG (from their RPG series, I know shocker) and didn't get that. As well as, of course, the cringe 'you can pick your pronouns' people.

I cannot speak on the writing because all of the countless reviews I've watched were very vague about it. I've seen both examples of extremely bad writing and some quite good writing and I suspect that has to do with the fact that there were multiple writers working on this as well as rewrites etc.

We'll have to see once the game comes out and people can fully review it (remember all the reviews that came out before release date were still subject to EA's guidelines) just how much of the game is truly poorly written and how much is just an overreaction.

TL;DR
This game is God of War Ragnarok with some dialogue and story choices, as well as VISUAL customisation of your character, NOT an RPG. If that sounds appealing to you, you might like this.

But for a Dragon Age sequel, a storied RPG franchise I imagine it falls short of what TONS of people wanted.
