Mage specializations issues

So as always my first playthrough in a DA game is a mage. I have been playing for a while and because I chose the Mourn Watcher background it felt natural to go for the Death Caller specialization. I just feel it is a bit underpowered ? Yes the afflictions are plenty and help but spirit bomb feels really underpowered as well as the siphoned effect it applies does not restore much health especially later in the game.

Anyone else feeling the same ? Any Evoker or Spellblade specs out there who can share an experience maybe ? I was too scared to go the Spellblade route even though it felt fun because of the mage's low defense tbh.

Some specialization require more items, then others. Death Caller require a lot of health and ranged damage. Evoker can kite, by freezing enemies, so easier start and more spells on cooldown. Spellblade, can nuke a lot better, assuming you can solve the mana need.

With Spellblade I focus on keeping Shocked on the target and Shocking Weapons on me. That way the main Orb/Dagger combo does a ton of damage. Do you use that unique equipment piece (don't remember which one it is now sorry) that goes well with Shocking weapons causing AoE shocked effect ?
