Can't get past the gate in the Lyrium Dagger mission

I am playing as a dwarf with no range skill and I am stuck in the Lyrium Dagger mission. My party is going after a ghoul that stole Solas' dagger. We are at the gate with that bloody blight balloon on the left wall. My character can't use spell or bow to shoot it and I am stuck. Am I missing something or is this a game bug?

You can throw your shield at the balloon with Q.
