Combat Discourages Anything but Warrior Class
Note: this is from Nightmare Difficulty perspective

So, after about 50hrs of the game Ive come to a conclusion that the Devs just hate anyone playing anything other than a Frontline character.

Since your NPCs are Immortal, they dont pull aggro, so everything attacks you, and only you. Yes, you have occasional taunts from allies, but they last 2 seconds...when combat lasts 60+ seconds you get like 2 taunts out, 3 if you hit low health and get a lucky freebee.

This style heavily discourages Mage and Rogue play.. Especially Mage that already has to respec every 2 seconds because of enemy Immunities, But then you also have no way of really getting your combos off because everything attacks you and you have to dodge 90% of the time after your 2nd attack.

It really feels not well thought out. and why they thought removing the fundamentals of Being able to build your Companions exactly like your Main character is beyond me...

The game is Fun, and the combat is interesting.. but I think having Immortal Companions was the worst choice, since Mages and Rogues really suffer because of it.

Yeah, that you get aggro really makes warriors shine and everything else spend a lot of time moving. I have to imagine its a nightmare (♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥). I imagine there's a lot of Taunt + Heal off companions which really limits combos. Sounds really grindy.

I think devs often don't put too much thought into their higher difficulties. Owlcat probably has the worst of it, but even studios like Intelligent Systems will make harder difficulties all-but unplayable.
Iam playing Spellblade Mage with a mana focus and i can just continue spamming skills and use i-frames, even dragons cant touch you.

ive been watching a playthrough as a melee and the guy constantly complained about the ♥♥♥♥ targeting system where he kept losing the target he had set, for the one the game kept locking him onto. from his pov, ranged is suited better.

I've only played 10 hours as a mage and I'm already sick of being the only one that the mobs aggro.
For me, it's as if companions were useless.

I play a mage on Nightmare. For most big fights I just keep skating around until the companion cooldown is over. Then do a big attack. Then back to skating around.

What engaging gameplay....

I play a mage as well, ended up using the sword and orb (FFXIV called, they want their RDM back), and it's almost enjoyable if I can forget that I'm supposed to be a mage from Tevinter. It's still not as responsive as Dark Souls.

I just don't understand how they could set this in the mage seat of power and then give us... this. Combat is so clunky, and then they gave us the exact same dragon mechanics as DAI. So, they didn't even have to really design anything new lol. What did they spend 10 years on? It sure wasn't the dialogue or the battle.

Haven't tried any other class, but the game was laughable easy as a warrior on the highest difficulty.

I mean compared to previous games, its still laughable easy on Nightmare mode as any class. but you get all these cool combos and ♥♥♥♥ that you just cant ever use because you never have the time to actually stay still and well, use them.

Not sure what you guys are talking about. It's not like warriors are standing in place tanking hits in this game. On my warrior, I'm constantly dodging to avoid damage. If I do take a bit of damage, I have one of my companions heal me, or I pop a potion.

I don't see how the dodge-dodge-attack gameplay is any different for a mage or rogue.

Nobody angry about the combat camera and the lock system?? Its one of the most annoying and terrible things about the game and other games!!

Same, finished the game on spellblade, and by the end you're so strong, with an invicibility skill companion on the side, you're unkillable, and kill everything, including bosses within like 10-20 seconds

Whats really stupid is that lock on disables itself when anything uses a movement skill and this applies when u have your companions focus stuff. I don't think anyone play tested this past the tutorial honestly.
The fact that mages can just do no damage because of resists is also really stupid. And the fact that the only mage class that is even really useable is the the stupid spellblade like i wanna shoot sht from a distance, why do i have to play melee on a fking mage.
Like i started a necro mage on nightmare and literally everything basically resists it, and in the tree it has stuff that changes most of ur damage to necro, so why even bother with it if ur never doing dmg, so i can use my companions vulnerability move over n over again?
N its stupid that ur companions stop focusing stuff if u use a ability for them, like why so much unnecessary micro management.

Spellblade mage absolutely cleans shop, especially mid game after you've unlocked AoE arcane bomb gear and enough skill points to stack stagger.

By late game when you can climb into both the fire and electric tree, and get the orb that swaps between electric and fire, you're stunlocking almost everything in the game and staggering in a single combo followed by 3 heavy attacks.

Tell me about it! Locking is only useful if attacking from a distance - in melee it just impairs movement. Also the camera is all over the place - sometimes I'm just dodging through random animations and then getting stuck somewhere, with no idea what's happening. Rogue also has an ability called Fortunes's Fury I find annoying, as I can't see anything when it's active, so it's just turn it on when in front of an enemy and hope they don't move.

Fully agreed, I cant believe this is a thing to be honest. My first playthrough was as a warrior and I thought the combat was actually pretty fun for most of the game, but when I started my second run as a mage, the fun of it was very quickly drained out by the near constant need to dodge and run away. I have never felt more alone on the field of a game with companions.
Im sure that I will get more survivability and more ways to mitigate damage as I get more talents and wont have to run as much even on the higher difficulty but man is the combat a chore now.
