IMHO, people are conflating too many changing variables when they say 'why can't we have another DA:O'. Everything has changed since that game, so it's hard to pin down what people miss the most!

Consider: Larian makes really colorful games that are also really tactical. You might want only half of that.

If it's the strategy/depth of combat you want, yes, you need a rules-based deeper framework for combat -- play Larian games, the PoE games, fight through the gristle of Owlcat offerings, etc.

If it's the vibe of grim bloodshed, the desaturated color palette, the 'low fantasy pasture verite' those games are out there, too. Not my bag, but you can search for them.

If you truly hate the gender pref/identity stuff and really need women being sufficiently normie/feminine/etc. for your needs, you'll get an eyeroll from me, but Witcher 3 would be the move (as dope as that franchise is -- absolutely loved W2 and W3 -- the author of the books wrote women as heteronormative and sexualized as possible, and the games honor that take).

Because EA is run by non-gamers who think success is determined by a spreadsheet of metrics.

Do exactly what you did, but with better graphics, optimization, and steam achievements.

And yellow rotten teeth on everyone! :D

I really wish we could, it was far more adult, more R rated and far, far more indepth with it's story and consequences. Sadly in the world of today, everything has veered away from that sort of story-telling. The old BioWare is gone, this is just another cloned EA trashpit, one that will sadly work because hey it's got the dumbed down action combat like everything else. Its simplified, because most don't want anything to test their moral drives anymore. The combat can't be slower, or else the majority loses interest, can't have games to test the patience of someone now, at least thats how EA, Activision, and other triple A companies run by the bottom dollar looks at it. My days of great gaming are mostly over save for a few good indy titles. I never expected this game to be good and so far I am proven right, in my opinion.

Their spreadsheets must be terrible if they keep copying their own failures.

I work in film/television. Part of the problem is these companies are run by old men who have a certain way of thinking that is not affected by reality. Many CEO's and executives aren't even fans of the products they make. They think there is a formula to maximise return and that's why they keep repeating their mistakes over and over. The other issue is these execs are mainly taught branding and marketing. People ask why they buy companies like Bioware and change them so dramatically. The reasons are because they think it's all about the branding. They believe making the games more "accessible" will bring in new customers and the originals will just keep playing. They don't understand that RPGs and action games have very different audiences and are always confused why their games/studios under-perform after being acquired. It isn't the brand, it's the game, but they don't know games so they always default to what they do know. Also when games like BG3 prove them wrong they always call it a fluke or an outlier.

When the original Deadpool came out all industry execs thought it would bomb because "R rated comedies don't do well". When it was a massive hit they came up with every excuse as to why they were wrong. "Oh it only succeeded because _____". When you point out other successful R rated comedies, no matter how many, they will still fire out the same excuses. The video game industry has the same mindset.

Another issue is how massive EA is and the amount of income they need to function. They are not an innovative company and chase trends (looter shooters, MMORPGS, loot boxes) and so on. They grow their company by acquiring successful ones, they don't grow organically. They NEED their games to sell 7 - 12 million copies to justify the massive amount of money they invest in advertising and development (in that order). The problem is most games don't sell nearly that much and never will. A successful game is one that sells a million copies and anything more is a breakthrough. They think they need their games to be an easily accessible slurry with no complicated features. Most of their games fail to make their money back.

EA lost FIFA and if they ever lost Madden they'd be screwed, big time.

DA:O hasnt gone anywhere. Plus there are rumours of a DA:O remaster in the works but take that with a grain of salt. Also also with six different backgrounds that affect the game, Veilguard is very reminiscent of one of the main features that people liked about Origins, ala the origin system.

But really DA:O can still be bought and played just like the good old days.

because then we'd need dragon age 1, so that dragon age 2 would be the sequel to something, and inquisition a spinoff.

actually that's not a bad idea.

someone give him money

There will never be a game like DA:O made by Bioware again. You need to look elsewhere.

I do. I'm checking bioware like checking the news. have little interest in their games, unless some miracle happens.
Because of EA. When EA took over, Dragon Age Origins was almost finished.

Dragon age 2 is a good sequel imo.(at least it felt like a DA game)

But I wasn't a fan of DA 3.
