HEAR ME OUT !!!
I will start off by saying i have seen the gameplay yesterday for DAV and to be honest it looks quite good.

Now, to everyone that is concerned about this game's gameplay and the direction they took it in, let me reassure you - i have been a long time BIOWARE fan since the days SW KOTOR 1, have put over 300 hours in MASS EFFECT LEGENDARY EDITION and around 300 hours in DAO, DA2, DAI in total.

I am too an older fan of DA's classic more MMO style combat, but i must say that in the past that system has got to be kind of outdated.

And please DO NOT compare this game to BALDURS GATE 3 - yes i know BIOWARE made BG1 and BG2 but they have also since SW KOTOR 1 in 2003, they have started to take their games in the more action realm with titles like : ME2, DA2, ME3, DAI, even KOTOR 1 was more action-orientated than DAO.

Yes i know the older fans are dissapointed about the lack of that classic MMO style combat system and the tactical camera.

Yes i was kinda dissapointed yesterday in like the first 5 minutes BUT after seeing more gameplay and how abilities work but please hear me out.

Here a few things i will point out and i will try to reassure the older fans as much as i can because i am one too - an older fan :

1) COMBAT - the game's combat is clearly meant to be more fast-paced and action-orientated, the older fans will remember BIOWARE already tried this with DA2 and that game despite having flaws it was still a GOOD game, we have seen it is not like DAO or DAI but let's not jump the gun, that doesn't mean we will not be able to assign skill points to our companions or even configure their skill tree, just because we cannot control them doesn't mean we won't be able to configure their abilities and to make BUILDS for them

2) USER INTERFACE - those of you familiar with the MASS EFFECT series i'm sure you might be able to recognize how they made the UI in Dragon Age Veilguard, when that ability screen pops up it really does look in my opinion A LOT like how the UI in ME1 and ME2 was and how you select your companions abilities

3) COMPANIONS - so we know that companions will not be playable for the first time in the series, but this is not a bad thing, think about it this way : MASS EFFECT never had playable companions and the games were really good, it didn't take away from romancing them or having enjoyable conversations with them and making decisions

4) LINEAR MISSIONS - we all know that DAI's weakness was the fact it was open world and there were a crapton of fetch quests and the pretty much annoying power system that would not let the player advance in the story unless you had a certain power number, well in Dragon Age Veilguard the good old linear style missions are back like how they were in DAO and DA2 so that is definetly a good thing

5) GAMEPLAY - what we saw in that reveal yesterday, im sure most people saw this, our protagonist Rook was only LEVEL 1 which means the gameplay itself was indeed a bit underwhelming since we didn't get to see a full on maxed out Rook at level 30 + the other 2 party companions maxed out with proper builds, what i'm trying to say is that it would have been better if they showed what a FULL ON MAXED OUT party could do in an intense combat scenario with multiple enemies

Just because it's not the exact same style of gameplay which we had so far, it doesn't mean it will be worse, to be honest even i myself as long time fan, i found DAO and DAI's combat to be very frustrating at times because they were really slow-paced and sometimes it felt like taking down larger groups of harder enemies took forever.

I really encourage all of the older fans to keep an open mind about Dragon Age Veilguard.

DAO is the best, hands down, 2 is pretty bad due to action combat, and I recall thinking Inquisition was much better than 2 but worse than 1. Course, how long ago was all this? I remember using their site to redo all my choices and taking it all very seriously.

I think DAO is the best hands down when it comes to story, characters, lore but definetly not the best combat-wise.

DA2 at first i disliked because it was different from DAO but quickly grew on me and i began liking a lot the more faster-paced action combat.

DAI was a mixed bag - in the earlier areas with smaller waves of enemies the combat felt more similar to DA2 more faster because you took down enemies faster, but towards the end of the game when enemy waves got bigger it began to feel way slower because they were way harder to take down even with a good party.

Personally i like the direction DAV is heading even if it's not the same DAO - neither game in the series has been like DAO to begin with, but i do hold hope that maybe on PC the UI will still have full hokey bar MMO style just for old times sake would be pretty cool.

Do you work for EA? Cause this sounds like PR vomit.

Have you played any of the previous games : DAO, DA2, DAI ?

Because i have over 300 hours in those games and you sound like someone who has never touched a DA game before, you sound like someone who just got on the hate train because it's "cool".

I am simply trying to help out the older player base about what this game will probably be like so perhaps they will not be as pissed off about it and maybe actually give it a chance.
I’m from that “older gamer base” I won’t be buying this MOBILE FORTNITE TRASH

I just watched the companions reveal video and I must say that I did not like it at all.
Did not like the Marvel like presentation, did not like the art style, did not like the quality of animations. Just looks like a very weird approach for a DA game. Seems it was done to advertise a Borderlands game.

I just hope it won't do like Starfield did for me, going from followed to ignored.

The trailer was pretty bad in my opinion.

They also showed gameplay about 20 min - it's on YT if you wanna take a look at it.

This is getting ridiculous - it's like every game that releases and is more colorful starts getting bashed because it's like Fortnite.

I don't care and will never care about Fortnite but that doesn't mean i won't play the games i am interested in regardless of what art style they use.

If i see a game which i think looks good and interests me i'm not going to avoid just because people will start calling it Fortnite-esque or whatever nonsense.

Back when DAI released 10 years ago people weren't complaining so much about the more bright and colorful direction they went with instead the main problems were the big open areas and boring side content.

Now we got to "it's Fortnite themed" or whatever other BS.

I'm not trying to defend either EA or BIOWARE but i do think BIOWARE themselves are making the extra effort by going back to linear style missions, getting rid of the open world and even the more "mass effect approach" to combat - for someone like myself who has always liked their games i have to say the that approach is pretty cool because i know what they're capable off having played pretty much all of their games.

And don't even give me the "what about Anthem or Andromeda ?" reply - i know fully well how bad those games were, that doesn't mean they can't put out a GOOD game, if they actually couldn't they would have already been shutdown.
1.Why DAI wasn´t get bashed so much? Bc everyone was thinking- oh, this is just a bad egg in a basket, it´s gonna be alright in the future. Now we are in future and the games are getting worse and worse- not from "woke maffia" point of view, but in general.
BF42 game out not even in Beta stage, took them 2y to get it on playable level and now they concluded it with final season. Cost 90$ at start.
2. Sweet Baby Inc is involved in making the game(DAV), enuf said.

I was thinking why gamers don´t like it so much when any kind of politics is involved. And somehow I realised it only now- in any clan I´ve been in, the rule that has been unbrakeable even when the nuke would hit your doorstep is- NO FKIN POLITICS IN CHAT.
You can talk trash and get a kind reminder, but the second you bring up daily politics you get muted and or banned. That´s how much GAMERS h8 politics.
We just want to come home, get immersed in fantasy world and forget about all the sh*t going around. But some ppl like to throw it in our face all the time. When I see 5 cool artistic banner flags in Cod WZ and 50 "colourful flags", then anybody with 2 brain cells could see what´s going on. That´s just an most obvious example.
Also somebody brought up that the "woke acitivists" are not activists but a maffia- for example the Wu Kong drama- demanding 7$ million for woke propaganda. fk dat sh't. Gonna pre order the game and put DAV in ignore list.

I was also on the fence if DAV would be a good game finally and not have "the message" in it, but if Sweet Baby Inc is involved then there is no other way to look at it.

It was.. lots of people disliked it and its direction.
The thing is, while it was still hollow in many ways, it atleast still had RPG elements and a focus on character interactions and story to some degree.

The combat, questing, etc.. was awful.

I actually remember reading or hear something, not sure where maybe in the gameplay video that DAV in terms of classes it kinda will have sub-classes and the skill tree will be pretty good, so we'll be able to do pretty cool builds for each class.

In terms of quests i do remember reading that they took way more care this time with quests and supposedly each quest will be very story-focused and have decisions.

Hear me out mr bioware fan, Bioware hasn't been bioware for damn near 20 years, the people that made the good games back then don't work there anymore

We have been over this.

Classes in DA:TVG (its The Veilguard) are seperated into 3 classes.. many of the old classes have had their identity pushed into these 3.

Classes can dig into sub classes (there are a few new ones) it seems most of all like modern day, you can pick to become x, y or g awesome name now...
Abilities are still just 3 and while you pause its basically "execute special move" between all the roll roll dodge hit combat.

Story seen so far seems to come in short burst and without much agency. Character interactions seems extremely watered down and again short bursted. Think about some of the modern action adventures, where you do get to talk or see events with a follower, but don´t have to much agency outside "romance line or friend line"

Quest will be, stop Solas. Smash the Crystal, Go in this direction.. typed.. for what I have seen.. it wont have agency, its just go to a from b... clear mobs, clear mobs, see cutscene, clear mobs, do walking around with semi cinematic, then clear mob, then cutscene, then boss fight, then little cutscene.. then back to hub..

I hope I am dead wrong and you are right, but that is all I have found and heard so far (also from leakers that tested the game)

it's final fantasy 13 only its PURPLE with woke talking points in lieu of narrative. :P

I bet it took a long time to come up with that one right ?

So we're gonna just ignore every game they put out from 2007 to 2014 right ?

They had no good games in the last 20 years right ?

I agree with everything OP said. I am a fan from way back to DA origins and I think the game play reveal was great. I do wish they showed higher level aRook and characters to show how you can control their abilities . There is now a dodge and parry system. when the yellow flashes over Rook he can either dodge or parry.
In the game play reveal when you first encounter the venatori, there is one that Rook actually parrys the magic back at the venatori. it is easy to miss if you do not pay close attention.
I have been following everything that has been released and am very excited for DA The Veilguard.

I find it funny how many people automatically accuse you of either working for The developer or being a bot if you like the game. I guess people are not just allowed to actually love a game in a series they love anymore.
With every game that comes out now there is so much toxicity and hate in the forums. It has gotten completely ridiculous.
I also noticed many people just hating on the game only saw the trailer and not the game play. The trailer is not representive of the game play at all. The game is a dark fantasy game.

I think if they never had the trailer and just revealed the game play there would have been much less people hating the game.

I remember when Guardians of the Galaxy came out and people were just hating on it so much because of Avengers and when the game came out it was actually a really great game and got great reviews.

I always base my game purchases on whether I like the game, I do not go by other peoples opinions especially on steam forums because the loud group are mostly people hating on the game for reasons I do not agree with.
I think the game looks great and I love the change to a more ME 2 type combat.
I actually never changed between characters in DAI because I wanted to play my character. I always just had my companions tactics set and let them do their thing in combat, so the not being able to switch to the other characters is not a big deal to me since I never did it in the other game.
I absolutely am going to play this game. I am happy it is continuing Solas story with our inquisitor being in the game at some point. so i am happy. My opinion so take it as that.
I dont think you understand the appeal of cRPG if you are using BG3 as explanation. Sorry but this sounds like something game journalist will write.

At around 12 minutes in that gameplay video this is like a yellow glow kinda like an aura appearing above Rook's head at moments where the Pride Demon attacks - it seems like it's some sort of counter or parry system although i'm not 100% sure.

Idk there is just too much, too much of: Glowing thing that shows you the way where you have to go, Glowing thing that shows you that you will get attacked, Glowing thing of whatever ... its overloaded, dont see any kind of this bs in any Dark Soulds like game and those games are usually praised bc of there combat - and rightly so.

they said in the Q&A I think is where I saw this , that the UI has many customizable options. you can turn off all the stuff you do not want like the lines that show where attack is coming from. the thing you say is glowy above rooks head is for parrying the attack. that may even be able to be turned off too. they said the UI is very customizable so, if you do not like certain things than turn them off.

I fully agree with you 100% - the game won't be as bad as everyone thinks it will turn out.

The game is gonna be pretty cool i think if they get the combat right and the fact that it's ME1 and ME2 style is just awesome especially since i love the MASS EFFECT series - probably the greatest trilogy to ever exist.

Also i'm hoping PC users will still have the bar for hotkeys just like in previous DA games - even if we don't use it but just for old times sake would be cool.

Also yeah - me neither, i never changed to companions much even in DAI.

Only times i did switch to them is if an enemy was giving me headaches and i found one of the classes to take them out way faster.
I was a little put off when I saw that the character in the trailer (I assume it was a rogue) only had a limited amount of arrows (they did refill over time) which makes it seem like they have removed the option of full on archer. Also the character seemed to be able to use magic (it looked like a sort of lightning spell) so can none mages use magic now?
