Game mechanics are very similar and obviously graphics are much better. There is also (japanese) voice acting if you enjoy that. The story is a mixed bag; filling out all the cutscenes by playing the different factions gives a good background of the conflict going on but the final fight was pretty disappointing for most people. I still find it an enjoyable game as I like unlocking stuff and finding all the conversations between rune knights
As far as the gameplay itself goes there are quite a few changes from the original PS1 game, most of them unfortunately are a reduction in monster types and number, reduction in number of rune knight classes and some fairly significant changes in how elements work. The quest system is quite different as well; quests always take 1 month and the rune knight's class determines where they are effective at questing (forests, ruins, shrines, etc.). There are also now 4 equipment slots for each rune knight and monster, so there's lots of weapons, armor and accessories to find from questing in addition to the monster level-up items and stat boosters that were in the original game. Combat is pretty much the same, though the 3d attack cutscenes are no longer in the game and everything is shown on the battle map via unit animations.
There is also an extensive customization mode that lets you create your own scenarios to play as well as a challenge mode to unlock special rune knights by completing certain objectives within a time limit.
If you liked the original you will probably like this one as well.
For monsters some are just gone and others are changed/replaced. There's still quite a lot so it's not a huge deal, just less overall options:
Angel/Demon - no longer have 4th tier from special item
Centaur - not changed
Golem - no longer have 4th tier at level 30
Dragon - has one tier 2 for each element, but only Fire element tier 3 from upgrade item
Elemental - replaces Jinn, tier 2 has one for each element
Ghoul - tier 2 is now Revenant, tier 3 is Lich
Giant snake - replaces Hydra, now has tier 2 and tier 3 from upgrade item
Gigas - Replaces Giant, only has one tier 2 and tier 3 option
Goblin - replaces Scorpion, has Tier 3 now
High Dog (Hell Hound) - now has 3 tiers
Imp - replaces Pixie, still 2 tiers
Lizardman - now has tier 3 from upgrade item
Mandrake - now has tier 3 from upgrade item
Mermaid - replaces Merman, only has tier 2
Roc - now has 2 options at tier 2
Unicorn - same
Wyvern - same
Gryphon - removed
The main issue I had was the lack of branching Rune Knight classes. Males only have 2 caster trees now (Mage or Priest with no branching), and Ninja has been replaced with Thief. The Monk tree has no branching either, but Barbarian now has a full 3 tier tree instead of just being an alternate to Fighter. For females Mystic and Sage have been removed, while the Bard tree has been added for a Green element magic option, as well as a Dancer tree as a 3rd physical damage option (Archer/Lancer are still there). As with monsters still a good variety, just irritating to be missing stuff that was there before.
I also liked that certain nations are very similar to real life countries like Mana Selesia = Russia (many small nations united by Russia North+East today are seperate nation here too), France and Great Brittain. Pirates are SOOOOOO COOOOL like SO cool damn..
LOVED this game. LOVED IT !!!
Also a TON of voiced lines and actual story for factions beyond 3 scenes, even if they're nothing outside of "I'm pirate daughter, isn't it crazy that I'm a tomboy!" types of tropes.
But you could play exactly the same as the PS1 game and turn off all tutorials and still do fine. Things like quests spiraling you out of control or just sticking 3 large aoe units next to each other then winning the fight because the ai walked into it since it just defends or charges at you still, is all the same.
