that concept alone would probably save this failed game
I hope the company can at least stay alive to keep adding DLC collabs, especially possible BIG ones that could help them with sales like Sonic or something.
From the unpopularity of the Funko Brand to the highly questionable IP Choices (So you had Netflix on board but you went with Umbrella Academy instead of Stranger Things? And while I love Hot Fuzz, is that really a movie the target audience for a Toy-Based 3D Platformer is familiar with? And Battlestar Galactica, but the one season flop and not the critically acclaimed reboot?)
Anbd of course what was likely the biggest kiss of death, the failed marketing.
When the game announced, I legitimately thought it was a game mode for Fortnite and by the time I knew otherwise the game had been out for months.... There was also the fact that the Office was chosen for the first (and hopefully not only) Cameo Level Pack
Given how big of a movie Wicked was, one would think they'd have tried harder to capitalize on its popularity.
And the FNAF Content.... FNAF is amazing and that fanbase will go gaga over the smallest of things, it's surprising the FNAF stage was never on that fanbase's radar. You'd think there would have been tons of videos screaming "OMG! MEGA MAN AND COLONEL SANDERS SPENDING A NIGHT SHIFT AT FREDDO'S!?!?!!!"
I can only hope 1010 does better in its future venture as they are a very talented studio with impassioned professionals., and that if there is a miracle that can happen during this game's supposed second wave of DLC that it happen quickly.
Sadly a lot of people who hated on this game clearly never even played it. When I read about the game flopping, I found some reviewers claiming it "Just wasn't a good idea to do a Toys-To-Life game in 2025!"
When... this isn't a Toys-To-Life Game.
This is sadly destined to be one of those games that falls to obscurity, but gets picked up by a Youtuber 10 years later in a click bait video titled something like...
"Remember that time Mega Man and Scott Pilgrim went to Freddy's?"
And then it gets a dedicated cult following who don't play the game, but watch Youtubers have a field day with it.
Some things here are not or not entirely correct though.
For one Funko is not unpopular at all. Given the enormous amount of Funko Pops and licences they have the brand is clearly very succesfull. Hence also the idea to produce a game themed around it.
Second the original series did kinda flop, but not because it wasn't good. That series came out off the back of Star Wars and Star Trek and couldn't compete with those. The fans it did have still remember it fondly though.
Lastly the odd choices for the worlds, I would guess money is the culprit there. The more popular franchises also cost more money to licence and the budget may have been to limited. So the choices although odd may actually be totally understandable.
funko pops do make a lot of money but there is also a lot of people who think theyre really really lame
This, they're mostly associated with nerdiness and hoarding, which isn't a great look. They're also associated with cheap gifts which.... yeah...
Perhaps I have a lot to learn
It's true that the people who dislike them seem to really dislike and sometimes even outright hate them. It kinda reminds me of gaming back in the past. Quite a few kids actually loved it (which you could tell by the chatter on the playground), but at the same time it also kinda had a reputation as a "nerd thing".
Probably the questionable IP Choices and the Funko Branding
You wanted them to have a crappy fighting game. I don't think anyone would have liked that and it would have been far worse off then it is now.
The games biggest draw back was probably marketing strangely enough, I found the game when I was randomly searching through steams upcoming games and thought it looked really cool, sort of like Lego mixed with Funco pop's and some IP"s that interested me, He-men, Back to the Future, and a few others.. I mean they could have done a bit more in terms of marketing the game to people, I mean maybe a few random online ads, or youtube videos or something but I just didn't see anything at all, which is weird because of all the IP"s included.. With that said, a few more IP's and worlds would have been nice.
When I played the game the first time it just missed the mark.. where Lego is fun and exciting and not really that difficult, this game tried to be extremely difficult.. Like I was getting completely destroyed while what I needed to do was sort of kind of unclear.
A game like this going to gear towards kids, yet the game was giving me vibes like old school Ghost and Goblins, just way too hard for the intended audience. Most kids have really short attention spans, if they can't progress they are just going to put the game down and move on to something else, especially when the main franchises are mostly 80's ish, and adult movies. Kids likely don't even care because it's not stuff they recognize, and the game just isn't really good enough to keep the adults who will remember the franchises and love them... to keep playing.
They seem to have adjusted the difficulty a bit, which is great, I played a bit today and was progressing through the He-Man story, but I just wasn't engaged, it's not funny or humorous like Lego, the stages are kind of poorly designed and it just wasn't fun. I can play lego games for hours, just messing around, breaking blocks, trying to discover ways to unlock new content, this game was like, meh I don't really care.
I do hope it's successful and we get additional worlds and franchises included, I know their's a lot of content I'd love to see get some video game love, while this game has a premise I love, lots of characters and lots of different pop culture characters, it's just not fun to play. I'm not really sure if they can do anything to fix that lack of fun aspect..
Lego games are actually fun, and humorous, they are the right blend of difficult to scratch that gaming itch (trying to get all secrets, etc), and easy for kids to just sit down and run around aimlessly.. just breaking bricks, and not really accomplishing much else.
Interesting that you think this game is aimed towards kids. From that I assume you don't really know the Funko brand. Funko Pops are actually more of a collection thing aimed towards adults, which is why it has a lot of licenses from older or adult properties. (though they do also have licenses aimed towards kids) It even has Pops that are now sold on ebay for hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Given the licenses used the game is also clearly aimed towards the more adult fans of the pops and is all about collecting the playable characters and skins. I do agree they could have made the levels a lot better, but it's clear to me the levels are actually seen more as a means to an end. This is not a game geared towards long sessions, but rather short bursts of playing.
