I've played every character numerous times as their base model, not variants. I've gone into each individual world and used those story characters. I even went through and switched to each character while running through the factory. I was at 52/60, went to 55/60, now stuck at 59/60. Is there any way to figure out which one it thinks I haven't used?

Sadly there isn't a way to know/see what character it is. I had the same problem the first time I played the game. It is really annoying and time consuming but your best bet is going into levels playing as each character for 30 seconds each and switch into someone else and hope that it finally counts the character it thinks you haven't played at yet.

thanks, i was thinking it was a time thing. i was just jumping in, smashing stuff, getting some currency and then switching.
