this game would be so much cooler if it were RTS
speaking of niche games, could you imagine a game similar to hearts of iron 4, but where you could actually partake in the battles going on? combine grand strategy with a modified RTS. I'd even be ok with just witnessing the battles tbh if RTS would be too hard.

there are basically NO games out there, or no games in production with this concept. but with this title you basically have it, just minus the turn based of course.
actually while writing this I actually recalled there are some games like this, and only really failed because of the dev teams incompetence and not a lack of users being interested.
Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865)
Steel division 2
Ultimate General: American Revolution
Kaiserpunk

and I know, the dev team staple seems to be turn based. imagine if you did something similar but had a toggle real time option. you could even give some autonomy to certain squads or units, to take some of the mental load off for some of the older players, for instance:
"follow squad"
"support squad"
"find cover and engage"
"search and destroy"
"defend position"
"skirmish"
etc.

of course, there is a divide between real time and turn based gamers. mainly age. while sitting there for endless hours debating a few turns is cool, I think a majority of people would much prefer the rush and unknown of real time combat. one squad just got gunned down by a hidden MG, you have 2 seconds to order your other units to halt or they will also die.
you just lost two panzers to AT units, you have a few seconds to pop smoke before you get destroyed. you get the idea. turn based gives you wayyy too much time to react to situations like these and takes the edge out of ww2 combat. there are of course situations where turn based can be harder than real time.

so, to the devs. why not try one ww2 RTS game? similar to the other game mentioned above, you could even do it from the angle of only controlling a small battalion or some other unit. you would be given orders by the ai, told to go here, take this town, defend this town, assault this position etc. so your war impact would be much much smaller but you could still feel like you made a difference, and based on your performance maybe you could be given more units to control or more power. or you could even try an eco sim of sorts. let the ai control your army, while you focus on the economy and logistics of the war. so based on your performance it would directly impact the tide of the war.

so many cool ideas that could be done I think, the only thing holding you back is literally the turn based aspect of the game, and with paradox's recent staggering failures I think you could legit get a huge following if you took a stab at a game similar to hearts of iron 4.

Disagree about /this/ game needing to be RTS. We have enough RTS's. They're too compl,ex for my liking and I can't keep up. I've been wanting a turn based game like this for years.

GIve me Company of Heroes or Sudden Strike in a Turn-Based and it's insta buy (if reviews are good).

As for them actually /doing/ an RTS... then I recognize there is a market for that.

like I said there are ways around this. bullet time, pause, etc. best of both worlds if you can't keep up.

Or you use the Pathfinder games approach of offering both real time and turn based options so you are both happy :-)

You have CoH if you want to play WW2 RTS. I really like the fact that it's turn based and thusfar having a ton of fun with the game.

I like it as it is give time to think about next move.

Turn-based all the way for me. Always has been. Got burned out on RTS in the early '00s.
The OP can go play Steel Division 2 or Mius Front.

Disagree 1000% and more. This game and "The troop" are the most interesting tactical games about WWII since Steel Panthers. Having them real time would be sensless...

Morevoer Steel Division (which I personally don't like) and Ultimate General series are far from be "failed", maybe just for your taste.

RTS is for twitchy CPM gameplay. Turn based is for contemplative and strategic game play. Saying it might be better - an analogy is "you hold up an Apple and say it makes a poor Orange" It is what it is- it may not be to your liking as "Your Mileage May Vary". Regardless Slitherine has released recent RTS to fill your potential needs as well as others publishers.

For me steel division 2 has so thoroughly captured the real time ww2 market that I don't think that I need another one until they release a sequel!

I'm going to also chime in saying that I LOVE that this is turn-based and have been looking for this exact sort of game for a while now!

Turn based is out of order since Battlefront presented Combat mission twenty years ago. In your turn you gave orders, then AI played and THEN REAL TIME compute while orders depended on the C2 and progressive moral system.

Newer games, simple halfbaked games and i agree that nothings (unfortunately) challenge Steel division /Warno or more hardcore Graviteam tactics.

We have some great RTS games, why not check out Starship Troopers Terran Command, Broken Arrow or Terminator Dark Fate Defiance?

Totally disagree. RTS is usually just click fest action with simple solutions command and conquer. Action not thinking and planing.

what complex? No way just the opposite its just that you're not quick enough and don't know the order. The games you mentioned are not realistic and they are streamlined with simple tactics so that you have to play in a certain order and be quick as in a twin stick shooter.

"bullet time" These are not action games like Max Payne or Bullet hell or even command and conquer. I played company of heroes and as a military game it was very unrealistic and got boring after a while as once you learn the order of things and how to do them fast
or twitch fast enough it was easy.

Mius Front, now that is a great military sim one of the greatest in my opinion with a rough UI to get used too, which isn't all real time and you still plan everything out before it goes into real time and you need to use pause at least on the very large maps with hundreds of units.
