any games similar to homeworld 3?
I love PC gaming and i just built a new pc about a month and a half ago. i am super excited to get some new games with great graphics especially. one of the first recent games i picked up was homeworld remastered edition. I enjoyed homeworld 1 (didnt beat it) and have been loving homeworld 2. my jaw dropped when i saw homeworld 3 is coming and have been following every day with so much excitement that i almost cracked and payed the 30$ extra to get the game 3 days early! well, after reading about the different problems, like the supposedly really bad story, the length of the game, and the supposed lack of depth in strategy/combat (ship shields and capital ships) i started to worry a bit.

anyways the paradox sale ended up coinciding with this 3 day paid "head start" and now i think my move is going to be, rather than buying homeworld 3 the moment it releases, i will instead buy the missing dlc for the game Stellaris and wait until the reviews come out for homeworld 3!

but that got me thinking.... there are probably many similar games to the homeworld series that i do not know of! i would love to hear any games any of you guys would recommend. my wet dream combination would be something like the dawn of war 2 set up, where your units travel from scenario to scenario gaining experience! i also would love a "total war in space" type of game. sorry if this was a little all over the place and thank you for your time!

Haegemonia! I remember that coming out. One of the first times I'd seen vertex maps in a game.

Also, Starsector...

Man, I'm jealous that you're just getting into the genre.

-Homeworld Emergence (was called Cataclysm) between HW1 and HW2, is available on GOG
-Homeworls Desert of Karahk is a prequel to HW1. All on planet but great HW feel.
-Sins of a Solar Empire (sequel was announced recently)
-Nexus Jupiter Incident (old, but great)
-Falling Frontier looks extremely promising.
-NEBULOUS: Fleet Command is small fleet with more detail. Haven't played that yet.
-Capital Command looks similar to Nebulous with better graphics coming out soon

I have nothing more to add, everyone's suggestions are great.
Of the suggestions here

Cataclysm/Emergence is your best bet. Nexus second, Sins 2 (available already on Epic or in June/July on Steam) third, Nebulous is more The Expanse so it'll be vastly different. Falling Frontier is to keep an eye out for.

Homeworld Deserts of Kharak is a hard avoid recommendation. Same universe, prequel but it's Star Wars Sequels levels of bad storyline-wise.

I know you're into space opera's right now, but I think part of that "Homeworld Itch" is for "special RTS" that are paradigm shifts in the industry.

In that regard, if you never played:
1. Battlezone by Activision (get the remastered Battlezone 98 Redux); and
2. Sacrifice by Interplay (unfortunately it doesn't work on my computer anymore), then you missed out.

You already know about Sins of a Solar Empire.

I personally don't like Battlefleet Gothic or Star Wars Empire At War coming from Homeworld because they are just on a horizontal plane.

Sins is different because it's a complex 4x RTS.

In short, if you are an RTS fan, don't miss Battlezone.

Distant Worlds 1 (or 2, like 2 more tbh) might be worth your time too.

Haegemonia Legions of Iron is pretty, but the ships don't really manuever at all. I personally view it as a sibling of Sins of a Solar Empire 1 with a proper campaign, better graphics, but worse mechanics.

ORB is the Wish/Temu knockoff of Homeworld 1. It's not bad per se, but there are much better options listed above.

I can vouch for Nexus the Jupiter Incident. That game is phenomenal.
This dude.

That game was seriously lightning in a box. I bet in 2030 people would still be wowed by it.

I actually covered that question a while back:

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
Ancient Space
Stellar Warfare
Genesis Rising
O.R.B.: Off-World Resource Base
Far Gate
Haegemonia: Legions Of Iron
Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2
Ephemeris
Dust Fleet

If you're gonna throw in BFG: A2 and not Distant Worlds or, Hell, if you have enough cocaine on hand: Aurora 4x, then it's not a full answer.

Regarding X series, depends on who you ask. Some swear by X3 with final expansions + mods, some swear by X4 as the future with new engine and prior factions/features being restored over time by DLC releases. I see quite a bit of negative feedback about skipping X Rebirth as a lesser entry in the series, though. For my part, I gave X3 a shot - its pretty, but I found the UI hard to get used to and that impacted my fun. There's definitely a learning curve to it and it doesn't click with everyone that buys it. Kind of like Eve.

Jupiter Incident was great. There was a Battlestar Galactica mod in the making that looked amazing, too. I wonder if they ever finished it. Also, Cataclysm is probably my favorite Homeworld game.
Holy hell how could I forget... battlestar galactica deadlock.

Haegemonia was proto-Sins-of-a-Solar-Empire.

Truly ahead of it's time.
