any games similar to homeworld 3?
I love PC gaming and i just built a new pc about a month and a half ago. i am super excited to get some new games with great graphics especially. one of the first recent games i picked up was homeworld remastered edition. I enjoyed homeworld 1 (didnt beat it) and have been loving homeworld 2. my jaw dropped when i saw homeworld 3 is coming and have been following every day with so much excitement that i almost cracked and payed the 30$ extra to get the game 3 days early! well, after reading about the different problems, like the supposedly really bad story, the length of the game, and the supposed lack of depth in strategy/combat (ship shields and capital ships) i started to worry a bit.

anyways the paradox sale ended up coinciding with this 3 day paid "head start" and now i think my move is going to be, rather than buying homeworld 3 the moment it releases, i will instead buy the missing dlc for the game Stellaris and wait until the reviews come out for homeworld 3!

but that got me thinking.... there are probably many similar games to the homeworld series that i do not know of! i would love to hear any games any of you guys would recommend. my wet dream combination would be something like the dawn of war 2 set up, where your units travel from scenario to scenario gaining experience! i also would love a "total war in space" type of game. sorry if this was a little all over the place and thank you for your time!

Man, I'm jealous that you're just getting into the genre.

-Homeworld Emergence (was called Cataclysm) between HW1 and HW2, is available on GOG
-Homeworls Desert of Karahk is a prequel to HW1. All on planet but great HW feel.
-Sins of a Solar Empire (sequel was announced recently)
-Nexus Jupiter Incident (old, but great)

On my phone now but I'll add as I think about more.
appreciate the feedback! question! would you say that HW1 and HW2 should be finished before playing Deserts of Karahk? maybe i should just beat 1 and 2 for the story's alone, as i hear they are good! lastly, i played and LOVED sins of a solar empire! one of my favorites of all time! thanks and feel free to recommend more bro!

X4 Foundations if you would prefer a non-linear sandbox game. Pilots level up and become better the longer they survive, and if you want you can build up your own space stations and produce more ships to battle xenos, pirates, other factions (or dont fight anyone, just stick with selling ships to the other factions for profit).

It's been out on Epic Games for over a 1.5 years. I think Startdock is planing to bringing it to Steam this year.

Starsector
If you want something more tactical and open, with massive fleet battles.
The mod scene there is beyond amazing.

Sins of a Solar Empire 2, early access via EPIC games client.

No Z-Axis, still great.

Go buy Star wars: Empire at war and then you can mod the game using steam workshop up to 2024 game quality and graphics. It is a real gem.

Nothing is quite the same as Homeworld / Homeworld 2. Each space game has its own flairs and quirks.

Highlights are:

Sword of the Stars 1 with all expansions (skip the sequel) - 4X strategic gameplay with full 3d HW style tactical combat encounters.

Sins of a Solar Empire 1, with the Steam 1.0 release of the sequel due Q3 this year - hybrid 4X / RTS with 3d z-axis movement optional.

Possibly ERA ONE by the team that originally did the HW2 Complex Mod as a closer spiritual sister-game. Falling Frontier also seems promising.

Nexus the Jupiter Incident.

Somehow better than Homeworld for me.

this is inspired by complex mod i think. much steeper leaning curve than regular homeworld
