This is the same Woke idiot that did Borderlands 3 + DLC
Did you just spell idiot incorrectly while trying to call someone stupid?
i expect CONTENT! 6-8h SP, 1 Fraction in SP......2 in MP.....were is the Conent?
I give this game a 7.5/10 personally, and after playing the demo previously I was honestly expecting to refund the game before 2 hours in it so take that for what you will. It definitely has areas that leave much to be desired, but it also has redeeming qualities.
This game feels a lot like Deserts of Kharak but in space, so if you liked DoK you will likely enjoy this. However that does mean its a little further from the OG three titles. This will likely be the largest sticking point for many, and understandably so.
Visually the game is quite stunning. Im running the game in 4k with a 3080ti, and I7-8700K off a WD SN850X. Ray tracing is a particular highlight in this. The music and audio (both sound effects and crew chatter) are what you'd expect from previous entries, and quite good.
The game is easy to control even with its faster pace, some of the improvements to the control scheme and camera are great, and a major improvement from the demo is that now you can return to the older camera/controls from HW/C/2 if you desire or even choose to use bits and pieces from the old scheme alongside the new one.
The campaign is... lackluster... unfortunately. The story isn't very good, and the cutscenes are a huge departure from the style of the previous entries, and not for the better. Its pretty clear the major focus for the game was on the Wargames game mode, which is at least fun but I do worry that it'll get a little repetitive.
Fun little side note; You can rotate the mothership at will to stand vertically like it did in the previous games. Got a little dopamine drip from that :)
Dont get me wrong the game is far from perfect, but its good enough to not warrant a refund for me, though I wouldnt rush out to buy it at full price necessarily. It feels like it should be more in the $60 CAD range rather than the $80 CAD that its up for as it does feel a little lacking.
Most pondered comment I've seen so far. Yes, the game is not perfect, campaign is half the lenght of original games (roughly) and War Games, allbeit a fun novelty, is a niche game mode that can only be enjoyed with clans... which is a very rare thing for the HW franchise.
Storywise, I did liked the story. The departure of the original cutscenes for the game is a plus for me. Now don't get me wrong, I also liked the original style but come on it's been 20 years; there's nothing wrong delving the way they did with HW3 storywise. I don't know what people expected from characters. I see Imogeen as a nive version of Karan, which is good, since this game is also catered toward ppl never having played any HW before and its easy to identify with her. Even the villain was interesting, has more pressence than the Emperor from the Taidan Empire and wants domination in a less straighforward way than Makaan from HW 2 ever imagined. As for Isaac, I found him your typicall XO, nothing wrong there ( I allways found the unnamed officer of the first two games boring, 0 character development, and at least we have some of that from Isaac)
The main issue here is the lenght of the campaign. There's no mid story part, you start, you see some chaotic stuff going on, you find what you are looking when it would seem halfway of the game and then boom, straight to final boss. The ideas are there but they don't leave the game time to develop them. Also, the game introduces you to a few characters from Hiigaran High command only to just see them 3-4 minutes the whole game (and I think Tricia Helfler from ME 2 and 3 and Starcraft 2 as Kerrigan voiced the woman; such a waste of voice acting talent).
Gameplaywise, its a much more faste pace and forgiving experiencie than HW 1 and 2, more akin to DoK as you pointed out. Yet I still liked it. I can get why some ppl didn't liked the campaign for what you said and I added here, but calling it bad is waaaaaay overkill. Also , it's pretty common nowadays (unfortantelly) to have the campaigns bee a glorified tutorial for the multiplayer, which it is, but at least is a Multiplayer presented with a new story that connects well and pressents an interesting take on the HW universe. The only thing I missed (asside from a longer campaign), was the introduction of other subfactions, like someone to take the place of the Bentusii, or have Taidan Empire remnants, Vayger, or even Progenitors have more pressence (also, plot hole, where the hek is the Dreadnaught Sajuuk? It was the ultimate titan ship and they just scrapped it?).
All things considered, it might not be the best return for the franchise, but I find it a decent one, and the template from where to start reinvigorating the saga with new scenarios and support.
P.S: I find stupidlly funny ppl calling the script woke ♥♥♥♥ because of only femalle main lead for the game, and having the main anthagonist being a woman too... Didn't all the previous games of this saga had had a femalle lead as the main protagonist? Also, we've allready had 3 main villains as male (The Emperor, Makaan and K'had Sajuuk), it was about time to introduce someone from the other gender to be the big bad boss at the end.
Just hope the game does not get review bombed. And before anyone brings it out, I dispisse Sweet Baby as much as anyonen with a brain does, but I barelly noticed their filthy and stupid agenda on this game; they probably just ''joind the wagon'' because they knew the leads of this saga have allways been women.
There is just an air of exploitation around this one that sets off my "mid game" spider sense.
The visuals are lovely, but everything else seems to come with caveats.
>Now don't get me wrong, I also liked the original style but come on it's been 20 years; there's nothing wrong delving the way they did with HW3 storywise.
Yes there absolutely is. The original game came out decades ago and is practically a masterpiece in terms of the story and atmosphere. You're never shown any faces, you aren't introduced to any EPIC CHARACTERS, you don't see grand villains monologuing about their EVIL PLANS: all you really have for the whole game is a woman with a robotic voice, a by-the-books officer and the voiced of your ship pilots that always sound professional. And yet it may have one of the best RTS campaigns of all time, with a space opera plot that gets you to care not about some individuals but about a whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ race - and you don't even get to see these people or how they look like, but moments like seeing their homeworld in flames and what remains of their race floating in space in cryotrays managed to set the stakes really well and really get stuck in your memory. And it didn't need sad music, close-ups of people crying and being upset, sad violins with babycryins.mp3 to properly underline the impact of scenes like I mentioned "Kharak is burning" is more than enough.
Homeworld 3 gets it so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wrong that it's insane. Suddenly you get introduced to all those super cool homeworld OC's with their own ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dramas, constantly get pulled into cutscenes showing off all the ACTING and EPIC writing and are shown SUPER EVIL VILLAINS with the EPIC MONOLOGUES - like what the hell, did these people even PLAY the original games for longer than 5 minutes? The Emperor in the first game had 1 line, one ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ line. The Warlord in homeworld 2 has only like a couple sentences, and the Beast from Cataclysm only "talks" at the end of the game I recall - and you don't get to see any of them, it is not necessary. The writing and direction of homeworld 3 comes from the "modern school" of writing and it doesn't fit the style of homeworld at all - it also becomes doubly bad when you realize the same people writing the plot for this game were involved in ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Borderlands. After the masterpiece in storytelling that was homeworld 3 we instead get annoying hacks being like "uhhhhh this is basically like star wars and dune, right?" and trying to create Iconic Characters(TM) with Iconic Quotes(TM) and you know what I have to say to that? Piss off, I'm reinstalling Homeworld.

The story overall in the campaign is meh compare to the previous installments. The entirety plot of this game story is searching for karan s'jet & Khar-Sajuuk. The khar-sajuuk is not even the Sajuuk from HW2 or something unique like another new banana ship just for karan s'jet. Instead we get a copy & paste mothership Khar-Kharak. The incarnate queen as the main antagonist is also meh. While the Taidani seem to been reduce to kalaan raider or space pirates.
The game had a lot of time to flesh out the game play, mechanics, and roster of the fleet. They've could had at least expand certain ship lines like the Hiigaran corvette or incarnates fighter roster at least. The Hiigaren Battle cruiser is so laughable that I had to rely mostly more on my frigates or destroyers to do the work. The rail gun corvettes are like a waste of resource investment that it's only good for cannon fodder feed unless your enemies just let the rail gun corvettes snipe them.
As someone who had love homeworld and played all the games since the 90's release of the OG. The gameplay and mechanics for this game is just so bad right now or just buggy still. This game has proven itself to be much worse than DOK & remaster when it should had been better as a successor as it also had a lot of time to do so. It even makes HW mobile feels better than HW3 in terms of the cut scenes, story line plot & ship types despite its grindy mobile cash grab.
Less not forget scuttle and retired function mechanic isn't in this game for some reason when you need to build something else quick or want some RU's back like the older games.
I put this game a 6/10 and wouldn't recommend buying this game straight away for anyone else that haven't brought it yet. While it is aesthetically a beautiful game and have great music composed by paul ruskay. it's just not worth the price point you'll be paying for.
From best homeworld games in terms of overall game play, story, fleet roster of ship types and/or mechanics. Cataclysm/Emergence > Homeworld 1 > Homeworld 2/Remaster > Desert of Kharak > HW mobile > Homeworld 3
