I want to love this game...
I remember playing Homeworld 1, 2, and Cataclysm as a teenager and fell in love with the lore, the space combat, the upgrade system, and the units, etc. But this feels like a very mediocre successor.

PROS:
  • A fairly good reproduction of Homeworld 2 from a nostalgic perspective.
  • The introduction of a modern control scheme is nice.
  • Pretty good music score.
  • The introduction of a battle chatter/comms audio makes for good ambiance.
CONS:
  • The combat range for all units is unbelievably close. You practically have to smell the enemies breath to fire at them. If you are expecting battlecruisers and long range torpedo launchers to fire across the map, you will be sorely disappointed.
  • Units often do not engage with the enemy, even at point blank range.
  • The units move VERY slowly. I miss the responsiveness and quick unit speed of the previous games (fighters in particular are so painfully slow).
  • They did NOT innovate in any meaningful way. By playing it safe, it feels stale and repetitive. The introduction of map terrain feels gimmicky.
  • Each unit has a special ability, but it is so cumbersome and clunky to activate, they need to merge all abilities to a single window when you select multiple units.
  • Unit abilities are not very intuitive, and require excessive micro-managing.
  • The cut scenes are so boring, I lost interest in them very quickly. They focus too much on the navigator, and not enough on the fleet as a whole.
  • There are no super weapons like there were in Cataclysm.
  • The upgrade system was seriously simplified, if you liked the old research system, you will be a sad panda.
As a hard core life long Homeworld fan with thousands of hours in the original games, it is with great sadness that after playing for a few hours on early (backers) launch day, I will likely never play it again unless I am bored. They actually did a better job with Deserts of Karak than this.

I give the game a 6.5 out of 10, but honestly, if this wasn't a Homeworld title, it would likely be a 5 out of 10.

I pretty much agree. I liked the story well enough, it too, played it safe. I was hoping there would be some surprises in there but it was pretty generic. It's the weakest in the series imo.

I DO think there are a handful of levels that use the terrain and it's kinda neat.

I agree this game took a step backwards instead of innovating. The units are kind of dull, the combat feels too fast and spamy and the levels are waaaay to short and scripted. Art, graphics, and audio design is phenomenal (minus the effects, kind of underwhelming). It feels like someone new took over lead of game design who didn't quite understand that "Homeworld" feel. It's suppose to be a space naval combat game, not Starcraft 3 in space. TTK is still too fast, you build units too quickly, and there isn't a lot of time to employ tactics let alone strategy.

I honestly agree, this game is a massive let down, if you use legacy controls you can't even really interact with the terrain which blows chunks. The campaign throws RU's at you because units are so disposable.
The game looks great but past that it feels like a massive downgrade and the characters feel so meh.
Hopefully the modding community can make it into something great again but I'm getting tired of games missing the mark and modders having to fix everything.

Also the CTRL attack select sucks in this current version, everything that gets the command targets the same thing rather than how it used to work with units targeting things that they are good against. Like my interceptors will target a carrier rather than the other fighters in the attack select which makes it literally useless.

Man I really hope the post launch support is good.

I am desperately hoping that modders can make this the Homeworld 3 we all hoped for.

People used to play a game and move on. Not anymore.
