Same thing with Homeworld Cataclysm. At the start of of the game, the Kuun-Lan (Mothership) starts off the first mission with a meek, "Just a head's up, we are a mining ship. Don't expect too much from us." Then the last mission starts with a firm, "This is the Kiith Somtaaw Warship Kuun-Lan. Where do you need us?" That is how you do character growth. Wasn't instant, and a lot of lessons learned in blood along the way, but by then end, stepped up and was ready to do what needed to be done.
