I have seen in YouTube videos of my favorite streamers that this game has a large Campaign map. Does it allow the player to roam the map in-between story missions to do side missions or randomly generated encounters with the enemy?

Mostly between settlement so you can buy more supplies and stuffs , IF you have the supplies to move around to begin with .

Travelling cost ridiculously huge amount of supplies so I guess no. Probably in the endgame the situation will be better.

H-Hahaha...No. X_X Final couple missions still have you with the bare minimal amount of supply.

Supplies are a real problem, especially when you plan to command a big army! So I advise to dismiss crappy units like militia quite eraly - or units with minimal experience!
