You can probably halve the number of supply points given in this game and still beat it. Doesn't mean it should be that way.
The supplies should still be more lenient at the start.
So I end up with a very crippled army (compared to what I had before selling everything), needing ~40k supplies a day. To reach the location of the next campaign mission I'd need just a bit more then I have. I could afford those - but there is nothing left to buy because the settlements don't replenish and there is no "wait a day" mechanic.
At this point I'm locked out of progress in the main campaign with the following resources:
- 14951 good will points (huge, only because I sold a lot of valuable vehicles)
- 16 people (very poor)
- 71141 supplies (basically 1 Bradley, 1 Abrams and 2 Trucks towing an armored carrier and an artillery piece)
It really makes no sense at all - I can't even afford to have one measly fuel trailer / supply trailer in my army because the costs would eat me up. I even sold the fuel truck we got earlier ... And I sure as hell won't sell my Abrams tank because I installed a purple mod on it (missile countermeasures) which I of course can't detach anymore -.-)
"Funny" thing is - If I'd reach the next location I could buy stuff again (until that settlement runs out of stuff).
As my time for playing is limited I ended up hex editing my save to at least be able to keep playing the awesome campaign missions.
tl;dr: game is great, geoscape management is broken - or be prepared to only drive around with one humvee and 2 soldiers.
