On my first playthrough I accidentally did this, only problem I came across was lack of vehicles and experience (since chihuahua had a plethora of nice vehicles and experience to gain)

a huge amount of loot and other benefits, it's a pretty easy mission.
The game has a very low amount of missions and chihuaua and vega are the only ones that are somewhat fun.
You get a bradley, a mortar humvee and many other vehicles to sell

You miss the loot and opportunities to level up your units.

they probably won't help you in the last mission, if you skip them.

There is also an achievement to visit all POI on the map, so skip them won't get you this achievement.
After chihuahua there is this Kid called Tramp that shows you a shortcut to Vega.
if you skip doing chihuahua, then the city will not fall, or at least we will not know that, and you can pay him in Pesos.

when i did chihuahua and whent back up, i have been told right after (i think it was legion) attacked the city and took it.
I also recall that I have been told everything north got destroyed as well.

wtf... right?
all work for nothing.

Legion destroy Chihuahua after you left it but not Nueva Tortuga (The movement did reinforce it to prevent another loss). If you skipped the mission, the movement won't be able to help you later, because they're occupied in fighting the Cartel and Legion at the same time.
All I can say is, this game is scripted to be insane... You pretend your way into Tortuga, do all that crazy stuff. But when you wanna hit Chihuahua you do it with a light, mobile assault force. This is a frontal assault on a fortress occupied by an army, and the missions demand you to run a spearhead all the way across town to free the rebels (again). All the while you have to commandeer and hold the enemy barracks, travel through town to save sympathizers before they get murdered, and the game has you do this without giving you your entire army. I have two tanks, a Bradley, and two towed platforms that could make this go a lot smoother. If I had artillery I'd pound the entire thing to dust. And if you think about it, the Cartel has to be destroyed because they are working WITH legion, if those two really worked together then the movement, founders and any other group have double the threat to worry about, especially when cartel can invade your groups in return... So if you were a real tactical commander you would have to commit to destroying the Cartel before they and Legion unify in a way that becomes harder to break. And like the posts here read, if you don't kill them at Chihuahua, the movement will be fighting both Legion and Cartel... You don't want that alliance to happen because you'll be killing humans more over than machines... The real enemy...

If you hit Chihauhua, you come in with a light vanguard, then move in some mechanized forces and when you get ready to assault the actual fortress, you do it with tanks and artillery.

Essentially, you use your forces as they arrive in the battle.
