Just purchased this, what is the Public Test Server?
I got 2 downloads, one just says Fallout 76, and then this one says Fallout 76 Public test Server?

Short version: No you don't need PTS at all, all you need is Fallout 76.

The PTS is the same thing as any online game. If you don't know what it is, it's where you can play the test version of unreleased content and give the devs or the community feedbacks, similar to the beta version of any steam game.

The PTS version installs individually but shares the same ini configs with the main game, it works by copy-pasting your main game save every time the PTS receives a major update, so you can use it to play specifically on the PTS, with zero impact to your main game save. The PTS is only available in a certain time period and the PTS save is only kept till that time. The next time PTS receives a major update and goes online, the same steps repeat.

Ahh, okay, thank you, very good explanation.

I'm going to remove it, I could use the space.

You're welcome.

One more thing I have just recalled is that they'll sometimes reward you with special PTS pennants to the live version of the game, which is a little C.A.M.P item, if you join PTS at certain times. It's really minor but if you do want that when they say there is one, you can join PTS to claim that.

Usually the PTS is filled with players only in the first few days, after that it's pretty much empty. So it's usually alone even for high level players, if you're a new player and can't really reach or even solo the new content, it's pretty much pointless.

i would say keep both depending on region. there is quite a few cases when people was running paid version of it after certain time it broke down and only test server is available and original game not quite starting up. as long you can use it do so but be aware test server may be needed in future to play game because original paid version crashed

If you have issues with your live version game, test version does not solve it, they are two different things and run on different servers.

If you can't start the game, try verifying cache first.

If you can't log in, it's most likely a network issue and it happens, try standard procedures like restarting your router or flushing DNS cache.
if you want to have them make a better game i would say you player better start using there PTS thats when to give them feedback on the game, IMAO.

Where you get to test stuff and Bethesda ignores the feedback.

AKA, not worth installing.
