2.4 runs smoothly for me, and I've downgraded to it until the issues with 2.5+ are fixed.
I hope, it's just a piece of unclean internal programming. If it is somehow related to Unity, it gets much harder to work around. Let's see; I'd expect a few more patches for the update to come, maybe this one gets attention too.
Sadly I already deleted my 2.4 local save, when I saw that the game does not crash right away, so downgrading is not an option here.
And no, I am not overpacing the battle spiral. Running on cycles between 0.8 and 4,5 seconds. Also just checked; the difference between having the spiral on my current max speed (0,004) and having it off is only about 3%.
Sorry for the late reply, I had switched to the 2.4 branch for a while, but now I'm back on the main branch.
My machine's old, but should be plenty for this sort of game:
Core i7 6700 3.41GHz, at about 25% total utilisation, 15% of which is Idle Spiral, spread out across all the cores - no obvious bottlenecks.
GTX 970, 5% utilisation, 4% of which is Idle Spiral.
16GB RAM, barely touched by Idle Spiral.
The resource usage was about the same on 2.5.0 and on 2.4.x.
When I initially tried 2.5.0, both Scavenger and Nuke mode were OFF, and my attack speed was fairly low (TTA perhaps somewhere around 0.02, i.e. 10x above the cap), but the framerate on the main spiral was in the teens.
Currently I am on 2.5.3, 100x Scavenger, Nuke OFF, and framerates are better than they were on 2.5.0, but still not as smooth as on 2.4.x. Granted, 2.4.x wasn't perfectly smooth either, but it was smoother than this.
The visual lag is and was present even if I stop battling entirely, so I don't think it's a matter of loot generation or anything like that.
It's worth noting that Battle Spiral seems to be rendering fine (at least no worse than 2.4.x), it's specifically the main spiral itself that's choppy, especially when zooming in/out. I am using the Simple Violet style (cosmetically). Scrolling through Theories, which was never smooth, also feels worse on 2.5.3 compared to 2.4.x (I didn't check on 2.5.0, hadn't unlocked them then).
The game seems to be using Unity now, which has a notorious issue with having its update tick default to 50Hz instead of 60, which leads to a choppy look even at high framerates due to uneven temporal aliasing, I wonder if that could be part of the issue?
Edit: 2.6.0 seems to address the performance issues effectively, thank you! Even scrolling Theories is pretty smooth now.
While I appreciate the beautiful spirals, I really wish developers consider disabling the graphics and improving the nuke mode to make the game less CPU hungry.
