Can you play as a man or can you only play as a female?
I am curious so I know whether or not to pick up. If there is choice I may just pick this up because it looks like a good game.

No, you have no choice... but would you also skip HL: Alyx, because you play as a female Protagonist? Just play this game, it's awesome... Although it ends with a cliffhanger. But it's great. don't miss it.
