To put into perspective:
Raider cards (Red) are your typical source of damage.
Traveler cards (Green) are a source of movement, stealth, and damage.
Oracle cards (Blue) are a source of summoning, crowd control, and manipulation.
Warden cards (Yellow) are a source of defense, healing, and fortification.
The Stranger cards (Purple) are all the above, but with a twist.
Monk starts with a Oracle/Warden (Blue/Yellow) deck. Your starting cards are going to be weak for damage, but excellent for survivability.
For a character with lots of damage at the start, pick any of the three with Red in their deck (Mage, Brawler, and Shinobi). For maximum damage, go Shinobi.
Note that all characters after about 1-2 hours of playtime can complete the forest area (NOT the start area, this one has no boss at the end), and get enough booster packs to make whatever deck you want, effectively turning the character choice at the start into a cosmetic choice.
So, you can rather stick with the monk to keep a cool looking owl dude, or you can switch it up right away to see what other decks have in store.
But starting deck means less in this game as you can tune your entire deck easy after beating some runs. I suggest to pick the character with cool look. You will have to play huge amount of time beating this game with that fixed appearance while starting decks affect like 1% at best.
completed? how the boss hits you when you hit him. is there a way to bait the hands consistantly so they dont block you from moving three spaces away? granted i started a bunch of files and after you figure out how the boss works, beating him with card use is more than feasable, but without using cards at all?
Maybe they mean the forest area (you can go back to it after going to the hub, but no boss then)
that being said, all characters can use all cards. they don't have special traits or passives, other than the fact that their starting cards and appearances are different. the tutorial boss (golem dude) is not designed to be killed on the first try.
