The trailer and the packshot show that its likely how it works i guess, still i hope that there is some sort of monumental endgame project that needs tons of resources to be finished, bears risks and takes place on the top of the Mountain.
My second hope would be, that the game features different types of mountains and thus potentially different types of Mountain Tops or snowy areas.
Like a flat mountain top, a mountain top with a lot more snow, mountains with a larger snow biome in relation to the rest, maybe a sleeping volcano etc.
Looking forward to this game a lot. I hope it brings enough variation and replayability with complex gameplay.
Edit: I guess what upset me most was the tight connection between snow and death while life obviously found it's way also into the snowy regions of our planet.
Edit 2: I am coming closer. I guess the narrative isn't working here: Snow is too cold, doesn't work, full stop. People are smart enough to figure out how to get around in snowy regions if necessary, e.g. by burning wood or coal. Frostpunk has proven it ;-). And from a gameplay perspective, it would be much cooler if only the sky is the limit and not some ordinary-snow zone. Alternatively, perhaps you can come up with some story related explanation (be it religion or myth) why the snow zone is generally forbidden rather than technically not possible.
Whoops, looks like I've made this section about snow zone a little too dramatic :D While it's very distinct from the three other zones and you cannot just place standard buildings in there, there still be gameplay in the snow zone. Actually, Argentum got it perfectly right:
That's exactly how it works: when your town is developed enough (on the three standard zones), you can start raising a Summit Temple on the mountain peak (snow zone), a special challenge on its own. Think of monument building from the classic Impression Games, but with a little more to do than just setting up a few transport routes and waiting :)
I'm gonna write some more about this mechanics in one of the future updates, that's for sure :)
Yup, the plan is to have different mountains with different layouts, zones and resource availability, so every town you build have to be unique and adjusted to the mountain landscape :)
Edit: Also, thanks to both of you for other suggestions, highly appreciated!
I love strategy and building games especially and pretty much get any that is at least somewhat promising.
And this one is unique in its own way, burrowing a few things here and there while bringing new features or ideas to the table.
Especially the setting is interesting.
Thanks :) Unfortunately, Q2 probably won't happen. The game is still under ongoing development, still many things need to be done - so I can't give you any specific date, as any estimations are highly uncertain, but think about late 2022.
Full release.
There is a slight chance we'll reconsider, that would mean a few months earlier EA release. But for now, the plan is to go straight into 1.0 with some beta/demo along the way :)
The plan is to write a post like this every month. We'd like to cover every important game mechanic (and a few other things too) before the game launches :)
There are a few other buildings requiring heat to operate (i.e Ornaments Foundry, Smokehouse, Charcoal Pile). The higher they are built, the lower their efficiency of transforming fuel to heat.
Currently, the height/cold doesn't affect the clothing demand whatsoever... which is pretty stupid :D Thanks for bringing this up, I've just written it down, we'll definitely try to include this dependency in the design :)
Question, if the snow never melts in the snow zone, how could trees grow there in the first place? I feel like that would be above the tree line.
Happy to hear that :) And yeah, you've got us here :D Basically, the graphics for the whole snow zone is a rough prototype, work-in-progress version. It looked shallow, empty and just not great, so we just threw frozen trees out there temporarily, to make it just looks better. The plan is to not need trees for that in the final version :)
Any chance of discord for me to follow?
Another variation to the snow zone couldbe, instead of trees in the snow zone, having rocks and lichen and icelandic moss to grow there would be a nice alternate. Lichens can be harvested for their medicinal property, making purple and red dyes for dye industry and in extreme scenarios, an emergency food source.
Hi there, I'm glad you like the game concept :) No Discord just yet - we'll most likely set up one in the future, probably alongside some playable beta, so you guys would have something to actually talk about :)
Also, thanks for your suggestion about snow zone-specific vegetation!
