I have. They can't get their honey need met, so they don't come.
1. You don't actually need to upgrade Monk Dormitories to complete the tutorial. Just place a bunch of them (no matter where, really) to have enough Monks to operate the Academy (should be about 10 houses).
2. With Academy up and running, the Cart Post building will be researched - which then can be used for transporting Honey all the way down.
3. Other maps have more resource deposits, I promise! :D
The tutorial doesn't make it clear that the range of distributing items is limited to that area, and that you can't use the shafts to distribute until you research a tech to let you do so. There's only one copper ore vein on the middle area, so you can't bypass this by building another mine in the upper area.
This is a crucial flaw since it means your monk houses can't be populated cause they don't meet the utensil needs, and then you can't even progress the main tutorial because there are no monks to populate the academy.
The housing place is only important for the needs of the houses themselves.
Workers from houses in place a will and can be used for place b. (The workers pool is global)
You don't need to upgrade Monk Dormitories - they become inhabited by 4 Monks instantly after being build (and upgrading them would make them house 8 Monks). So you can just place enough lvl 1 Monk Dormitories to have population big enough to run the Academy :)
Having that said, I agree with you, that there are some issues with communicating stuff during the tutorial. Thanks for bringing this to our attention :)
