How do you recruit the Mage?

All recruits are rerolled every turn, when you re-enter the base. Each slot has a random chance to roll any available class, so upgrading the number of recruit slots can help to increase the chance to see a mage, or other classes.

Other classes can be recruited by constructing the Soul Explorer device.

I'm almost to the end of the 1st dungeon and have seen every class multiple times and never seen a mage. 1st party is level 3 and never once seen a mage to recruit.

We're not sure if it's just bad luck or if there's a real bug there, but if it's a real bug, you should be able to get out of this situation by unlocking a couple of new recruit slots.

This was what I was coming to check. Effectively have only seen Ravager, Sorcerer and Battle Priest in the default 3 slots. The ONLY time I ever saw assassin or cultist was the moment I unlocked them (I didn't recruit them as I needed to buy supplies still). Then only saw the Cultist again when I upgraded the recruitment slots (once, and did snag it that time). And only just now seeing a second guardian. Not sure if bad rolls or what but does bum me out that I haven't gotten to try the others yet.

There is definately a bug regarding the recruitment slots.. You have to unlock them and then one will appear but they never appear afterwards it seems.

You get all of them rotating when you unlock more slots. I've seen cultist and assassin and mage and guardian all mix in consistently once you hit 5-7 slots. Probably the starting three are the most common weights and that's why you see them.

Unlocking new recruit slots should fix the issue, but this will be addressed for good in the next update.

The problem seems to be from the recruitment pool.

I have upgraded the slots to 4 but only 3 pools still appear. After recruiting the 3 (and dismissing them) another one sometimes appear, sometimes not.

I upgraded to 5 but only 4 pools appear. Causing the same problem as above.

In another save slot, the problem sometimes disappear suddenly.
