Matchmaking Failed / Can't Play with Friend

For me and my friend, we can't even play together. I have to enable crossplay for him to even see the invite and for me to send it, and when we try either rift or online, we get matchmaking failed.

We've tried having one of us with crossplay disabled, one enabled, and both enabled and disabled, and we've tried both Rift and Online. In Rift, he joins and then we go through the dialogue and then the match fails. Online, he just gets stuck in a screen where it says "cancel" and he can't do anything.
