It has it's problems for sure, and there were some not good monetization practices, but it doesn't deserve all the hate.
Long story short I think a lot of people hated it from the beginning because of the low quality relaunch and if not then because it has always been lacking in QoL and a good new player experience. The team's dev pace was also unbearably slow.
2) Grinding. Lots and lots of grinding. In order to get some of the currencies you need (again, unless you're paying real money) you have to do all the daily / weekly / seasonal challenges. And that involves going into modes you probably hate (for me, that would be PvP matches). When the game feels more like a job than entertainment, it no longer becomes fun to play.
3) The shut-down. After it went out of open beta, the game was pretty much useless. Unless you were sitting next to someone in the same room, there was no one to fight. The AI only worked while you were connected to their online servers. Basically, the developers bricked their game. And I have no doubt they'll do it this time, too.
I did find the game entertaining for a while, but the negatives far outweighed the positives. I'm glad I didn't put any money into MultiVersus... and that I got all the achievements back when it was still in open beta. I tried it for a while after the relaunch, but really didn't see a need to stick with it. I have much better games to play than this.
But yeah, as the above poster mentioned, the monetization and grind in this game was really annoying. I honestly think it would have succeeded if all characters were unlocked from the beginning and if cosmetics were about 20-30% cheaper.
all in all, it's just the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ from the fgc that ultimately brought this game's downfall. they seriously ♥♥♥♥♥ and moan about every little thing. WB and PFGs are just as guilty but jeez I have NEVER seen such a vile community surrounding this game. the game has it's problems, most of which would have been fixed if it WAS JUST A REGULAR GAME WITH DLC but the community has found nitpicks in how the game plays and has turned that single complaint up to an 11.
and nomatter who's fault it is, we lost an amazing game.
They made fighter points to unlock new characters almost completely useless for people that played a lot in the beta and had the original characters all unlocked already when the game "officially" released. Making your veteran/longterm players wait over a month to be able to unlock new characters seems like it was a bad move... and one, of many, that only made their (already low) player count drop even more.
I feel like they could've put, at least, a little more effort into good cosmetics for f2p players. I understand a f2p game has to make money..But I also believe that for a f2p game to be successful, they need to establish a good relationship with f2p players. WB/PFG failed at this in a big way. Hell, they even failed to establish a good relationship with a lot of premium players.
The online experience was less than desirable, to say the least. For a long time, many matches would just feel downright horrible. And don't come at me with some "worked fine for me" because my connection is a 1000mbps up and down, and many users complained about online play issues on Steam discussions and Multiversus officual Discord throughout the game's lifespan.
Development did a piss poor job of handling character balancing, over and over again... but I won't count this, or elaborate on it, just because of how subjective that particular topic can be.
Overall, I really loved the concept of the game. Also, I wouldn't have put the hours I have into the game if I wasn't enjoying it. I wanted to see the game grow, and succeed, and grow some more. Unfortunately, PFG/WB made all the right choices to push players/consumers away from their game.
At least you slightly rectify the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you just said with "WB and PFGs are just as guilty" ... But also not really. Saying it is "ultimately" an entire gaming community's fault for this game's failure is asinine. PFG/WB pushed players away entirely on their own, with each update and season they released.
First off Tony is an Adult he doesn't need protection/support from a stranger he doesn't care about, due to his trolling.
Second tony during beta was more interested building his twitter since the idiot thought sending tweets Gushing about the cyberpunk anime while working on the game was a good idea and needed to be shared with his customers. (doing 3 things at once for hours yet NONE of them got his full attention.)
third was giving the community no time to hype upcoming things and characters. sam jack, ppg, raven were all announced only a week before release.
Forth he got death threats during the beta. It's nothing new for the media/gaming industry.
Hell phone based customer support get abused worse, more frequently, and for less pay.
Don't do jobs interacting with customers if you can't handle it.
Terrible hitboxes. Unbalanced characters. Poor mechanics and a live service setup that turned almost everyone away.
Not to mention the roster choice is a mixed bag. WB has a massive amount of IP's and the devs pick characters most people do not like or care about. Several are unknown.
Example: Why tf would I want to play as Nubia? We have Wonder Woman. It's a waste of a slot.
After recently playing online with Lola and getting destroyed by what's left of the mostly abandoned playerbase I legit just quit and deleted the game. I spent an hour trying to progress and unlock stuff, and got nothing worthwhile for it.
I hate the combat. It's bad. Omg is it bad. Your attacks either go right through your oppenent or they get canceled out entirely. Fundamentals are mostly missing. All you get is a barrier and a dodge. They function horribly. There is no attack priority, unlike Smash.
If you can't land attacks effectively, it's usually because you're fighting a character with more reach than you, or is bigger than you.
When you attack in a direction, you are committed. Unlike smash, you can't tilt left to attack left if you are facing right.
You kick left and the enemy dodges, too bad. You're open.
Also. Your opponent can fall out of, or walk out of your combos! Then punish you! That's how you know Multiversus is ♥♥♥♥. The devs really thought this was okay. This is what I mean by lack of polish.🤣
I love Smash Clones, but Multiversus is a bad one. I hated the greed and terrible cosmetics. I also hate the leftover playerbase. Just a bunch of toxic fun destroying circle jerks, who have no idea of what fun is.
I hate the people who made this game and I hate how they wasted my time with this half assed, sorry excuse of a smash clone that barely has the effort of one.
Play 1vs1 and you'll see just how messy this game is. Actually. Don't. Multiversus shuts down in May. Good riddiance. Rant over.
Well that "side" of the community is a very very small amount of people with mental issues, and does not represent or reflect the fgc (or any video game genre community). And also, it is ignorant to think that Tony Huynh receiving a few death threats from these kinds of people, is the reason the game is canned. Tony did not single-handedly decide to shut the game down. It has cost WB over $100 million dollars, and does not have enough active players and consumers to even make money because they have failed to deliver an experience that is more enjoyable than frustrating for majority of the people that played their game. Tony probably had little-to-no say in the decision to axe Multiversus, unless he just conceded and agreed to it's end.. which would've happened inevitably anyway whether he was on board with it or not.
