Create a jack in the box with the joker?

How am I supposed to do this? I use his down special move and choose the jack in the box thinking it will work and make progress for the summer bash mission but nothing happens. What do the the devs expect us to do? nothing is working.

Nop, didn't work either, tried both in PVP & PVE, touching it or not doesn't seem to work.

This is the intended way to do it, but the quest is bugged/mislabled and only counts Air Down Special Hits for the Joker and not Jack in the Box uses.

It was weird and only half counted even on the grounded special. Its just broken in general.

Not for me it didn't count at all for grounded special. I did 2 matches summoning the jack in the box. Both regular uses of it and uses where I actually hit them. Both instances of which went well above 5 uses/hits combined but only got counted for 1 total (which was probably me accidentally using it in the air in the first match without realizing it.)

After which I googled and found the reddit post saying it was actually air down special and then got the mission completed in one more match only using the air down special/not using the ground down special at all.

Like I said, I started the second match with a progress of 1/5 and during that match I used the jack in the box at least 4 times without hitting then did it 4 more times making sure it hit and there was no progress added to the meter. It was still 1/5 after it. The Jack In The Box uses do not count for it at all.

3rd match, no jack in the box uses at all., just used the air special and it completed.

You need to get hits with the jack in a box down special then attack to create a jack in the box instead of a canon. You also have to be as the Joker and not The Batman Who Laughs.

They have entire missions in the Rifts that are locked unless you have specific characters and even specific OUTFITS unlocked for said characters unlocked. Seriously?! They won't even let you "rent" a character for a single match or something like that even just for the rifts?
