once you pick your faction are you locked in? or is it possible to have a bandit and a stalker?

You can make a character for each, but you can't change a character from Stalker to Bandit or vice versa. Later you'll have a choice of two sub-factions unique to the main faction you picked. You can transfer between those for a sum of in game money.
