Keep in mind, your attacks come out one beat after your input (two beats after if it's a heavy attack), so the only IMMEDIATE feedback you get for it is the "HEY!" sounds when you press the button with the right timing. That's your indicator that you're getting the on-beat damage bonus.
The main draw of the battle system here is doing crowd control with all the enemies, keeping the attack timing in mind for lights and heavies. It gets more complex as you unlock more combo variants that mix up both attack types and have different effects on hit (launchers, extra energy regen, calling in a partner to apply a stun debuff, etc).
The enemies also telegraph their attacks to the beat, all of them do in some manner. Both you and them always follow the music.
So you're gonna end up having to time parries and dodges with the beat too, not just your own combos (which you sometimes may have to cut off to parry to the beat and then counter).
...I can't really argue against what you said about the music though. Most of this game's music is rock which is unfortunate because it means most songs end up having a similar tempo, the same basic 4/4 beat, and melodies that most of the time aren't all that memorable. It just kinda blends into the "rock slop" soup.
There IS some variety mind you, stage 8 has some REALLY good jazzy stuff for example.
But yeah, if you're not a rock fan (or a gring0, same thing), then a lot of the music isn't going to "click" for you.
I know it didn't for me, but the gameplay has been good enough to keep me playing anyway.
Nah, I get the "Ey" each time, but I don't get why this feacture is suppose to be so good like everybody is praising. This is another game that I will never understand how it got so many good reviews.
I can also question why games like GOW reboot are universally praised when I find it inferior to literally any GOW game that came out before it but its just not for me.
Imagine DMC if it had rhythm game mechanics and matching audio cues so you don't get potshotted from offscreen by random grunts.
If you're NOT into the rhythm aspect of it though, or the music, then it's gonna be a harder sell for you and that's fine. But keep in mind that as the mechanics open up a few chapters in it gets a LOT deeper and more engaging than it might initially seem.
If you don't enjoy it, that's fine. If everyone that liked the color blue and reviewed a blue game really well, but you like the color green instead, thanks for giving it a try, but maybe it's just not for you.
As for the dialogue breaking the pacing... I feel like it is fairly consistent throughout and sets that tone early on. All the quirky puns are a large part of the charm. If there was less, I think the gameplay alone would get a bit repetitive. The platforming is bad tho, yeah. Bad camera angles make some jumps harder than they need to be.
You might see it as me being biased because of my review for the game, but its not like you really have much of a leg to stand on when it comes to your opinions. Just saying
