It's also not a super strict rhythm game, like more recently Metal: Hellsinger, you can still attack and do stuff without the combo's, you just aren't getting the full damage potential. I can't imagine they'd do anything to change the gameplay though, it's built pretty heavily around hitting the beats for the cool stuff.
There's a word for this: arrhythmic[merriam-webster.com].
Its not super strict until you have to parry then if you miss even once ♥♥♥♥ you redo the entire chapter
