Hi-Fi RUSH

Does this get a lot better after the first level?
Not really feeling it so far. The first level was boring and overlong with very little in the way of interesting design features. Slow paced with a lot of just . . . walking, combined with sluggish movement. The first boss was just bad . . . it wasn't difficult but the camera and collision detection made it very difficult to tell when you are in range to hit or be hit

I could see how maybe there's a good game to be had in later levels, but it could also just be the latest overrated, trendy, flavor of the month game. I have a bunch of pretty good 3D action games in my backlog like Bayonetta 2, Astral Chain, etc. Is Hi-Fi Rush worth sticking with or have I already mostly seen what it has to offer?

The game itself isn't really hard. You can beat the vast majority of everything by pressing X, using your team mates every refresh and parrying. I'm not sure the game was designed to be in any way difficult but accessible and fun.

There is a lot of walking and not a lot of combat. Some fights can take longer than some but the main gameplay beat is exploring and platforming.

The above might not make it sound appealing, but it depends how much fun you find in that type of thing. I like the art style, animations, characters, combat gameplay music etc. I'm not a fan of the long levels with walking but it's a mild gripe for me.

Get to Rekka and see what you think. If it aint grabbing you by then it's probably not for you.

i love the walking, its so good reminds me of bayonetta 3 pacing.

The combat is sick you get to beat the crap outta everything!

Also timing is super lenient so you dont have to nerd out to win.

Well i played on Hard so i did get my butt whupped quite a few times in some spots, parry can be super important!

So, first I would ask what difficulty you're playing on. I went through my first playthrough on Hard and had a blast. Replayed the first level on Easy and....yeesh it was not enjoyable. Not sure about Normal difficulty.

That aside, this game will always be a mix of explorative platforming (for hidden items) and combat. It's not a purely combat focused game like DMC or Bayo. You do unlock more combos, more abilities (like Parry) and whatnot and it does get quite a bit harder as time goes on.

Combat, at least on hard, will benefit from you using different moves and people at different times for single target, AOE, etc. The method of spamming X and triggering the partner attacks on cool down does risk you dying often though as it makes the screen and audio overly busy so you'll want to be more selective on what you do and when, again, when on Hard.

The game will stay a mix of Bayo's more button mashy combat and DMCs more deliberate, decided inputs for combat.

The first few stages are probably the most interesting. Once you get past stage 3 you suddenly have to juggle multiple enemy types that can only take damage after you hit them with the appropriate partner attack enough times, then when you get parrying the game starts marching out call and answer sections. These sections show a series of parry/dodges you need to perform and then you need to perform them. They aren't very fun, there's not much visual spectacle, and for some reason they decided an entire boss needed to be an extensive series of these call and answer segments.

every Space Channet 5 Part 2 boss is that way and it kicks butt!

Improve your skills.
