Ben Reilly is a nearly fifty year old character who outright replaced Peter as Spider-Man on multiple occasions. He was literally the main Spider-Man more than once.
That's never really been the case for Miles. His being an Ultimate universe character meant that even when they killed off the Ultimate Peter Parker, the original Marvel universe Spider-Man still continued on, completely unaffected. And when they brought Miles into the 616 continuity, they still didn't replace Peter Parker, either.
The 2099 comic run was never that popular, and the entire thing only lasted about seven years. Miles has been around longer than that by this point. Spider Noir was a limited run in a series of limited runs. Not surprising a character with four issues at the time didn't get turned into movies and video games, any more than What If? versions don't get that kind of treatment either. Miles on the other hand was introduced into the line of comics that heavily influenced the MCU.
As for why there's more Miles stuff, as much as right-wing bobbleheads love to hate him, he's proven popular. The notion that'd they'd carry this character for so long, across multiple forms of media, if he didn't sell well is absurd. Into the Spider-Verse was both critically lauded and well received by audiences. It's the reason there's a video game spin-off with him in it.
You don't have to like it, but again, the saltiness won't make him any less popular. It's the same reason Spider-Gwen started appearing everywhere. There was an audience for it, including with people who wouldn't have been interested in comics beforehand. Their enjoyment of comics isn't any less authentic than yours is.
Nah, this isn't about sides, this is more how angry young men have railed against media they feel traditionally represented them that have since expanded to be more inclusive. Like comic books. The whole "anti-woke" mentality is just bitter grapes. Are some inclusive characters poorly done? Sure, but there's countless poorly done superheros out there. They don't all have to be white.
But your notion that seemingly any minority take on an existing character is just a "token," well, that's just lazy thinking. You don't have to like Miles, but it honestly sounds like you've never considered giving him a fair shake as a character.
Racists will do anything to avoid admitting what they are, even so far as the ad infinitum strategy like that kai guy seems to be fond of. You are wasting your time arguing with these idiots. Unfortunately all of this bad blood needs to be bled out on its own over time, you aren't going to convince racist white people of the truth.
I have an issue with Miles Morales as a character because I think making his dad a hero cop was a bit tone deaf in these times we live in (I'm not sure when the character was created--my only experience of spider-man is the game because I don't read comics and I didn't see the movies). I also wish they kept the science nerd aspect because I think there is under representation of black nerd culture in media. Why did his friend have to give him the drone hacking app? Why couldn't he program it himself? You can be black, cool, and a nerd; these things aren't exclusive of each other and I think it was a missed opportunity. But, I think he's a step in the right direction.
If those alternates negated the classic version we've loved, they would disappear quickly. If they only add more to the story, legacy, or the like, it's pretty much par for the course in the comic world. The idea is to expand, not restrict.
Excellent points. I'd add Ben Reilly, but I wouldn't want to derail this conversation especially as I always hated the whole arc with Professor Warren. But anyway you're right. Marvel has always had legacy characters, otherwise your namesake would be on a team with Toro and Jim Hammond, not Johnny Storm. Hammond of course, starred in the 1940s Timely comics with the Invisible Man and Flexo the Rubber Man and I'm sure there were Atlas comics with characters called the Thing from Planet X and the like.
Marvel is never afraid to capitalize on its legacy characters. For every Hulk there's a She-Hulk, for every Iron-Man an Iron-Heart, and Spider-Man has had MayDay, Spider-Woman, Arana~, Silk, Spider-Gwen, plus all the variations of Peter B., Ben, Peter Porker, Spider-Noir, Peni, Miguel O'Hara and the like.
What I want most, however, is a proper Spider-Man 2099 with Miguel O'Hara as the protagonist. All the stuff the world of 2099 could have you capable of is an untapped gold mine.
Miles Morales is Miles Morales
Race baiting is such effective troll bait.
Miles is just spin off, and everyone will always see Peter as Spider Man.
Same as when you say Bruce Wayne as Batman or Clark Kent as Super Man.... no matter how much wo ke media tries to switch those characters.
Plus considering how Spider Man ended they have to put Peter in sequel I just worry that they do not mess up in Spider Man 2 if they would try to put both character in...
He isnt a brand new character miles morales was introduced back in 2011, and there has bin plenty of random weird spidermans in the spider verse, Miles is just one of the few who has the same powers but isnt and alternate universe peter parker and they both exist in the same world, he gets his powers often after peter parker dies though and even " Stan Lee, approving the creation" so it was green lit by a creator of the original anyway lol
Yet no one complains about the introduction of peter porker odd that, why is it wrong to change spiderman into a minority or for some a female but not an anthropomorphic pig? haha get over it, its a non existent character that can be anything or anyone with spider powers.
