I'm not sure how the devs could pry the story open enough for a sequel, though.

Though I'd argue that many of the issues with the game (janky, unvaried animations without mouth movement, no voice acting, limited customization in a supposed life-sim game) come down to the game likely having been rushed by investors to get it out.
If I didn't see the above fixed, I wouldn't dream of spending anywhere near full-price for the product, and I get the feeling Square Enix probably knows this, and it might very well mean we don't see a continutation, even if I enjoyed the game despite all the above issues.
