- A way to passively generate income. Direct a purchased server to hack servers found in the game world. A successful hack would steal money from the target server.
- To raise your Hack stat. A successful hack would reward you with a certain amount of Hack xp. You need a large Hack stat for most end-game contents.
If you don't want to purchase servers, you can use a server found in the game world to hack itself. Or use your home server to hack other servers.Use the command "scan-analyze" from the command line to scan for servers in the game world. More details:

If you don't see the use for more RAM ... you're either early in the game, and it will soon become clear, or you're probably doing something wrong (and maybe progressing very slowly?)
I don't think it's a big spoiler, but I think what Quacksouls was trying to gently guide you to figuring out for yourself is:
$> scan-analyze 1 -a
.. which, from [home] should show your purchased servers. You can also connect to them directly from [home], if you know the names you used.
$> connect pserv
$> connect pserv-0
