Toggle helper option?

Quick question, what does the "toggle helper" button in the controls options do? I thought it would spawn hand dog to help me out in single player, but I guess not. Other than a sound, it doesn't seem to do anything? What am I missing with the toggle helper button?

Hi - this button does the following things:

1) 1P Mode only: Toggle the helper (hand dog) between different locations/actions if you're in a level that supports this. (Gravy Battle & Darkness). Basically.. you are able to control what he does in those two levels to get the most from him.

2) Make a noise
3) For a certain unlockable character it toggles a fun effect on/off
