Guards patrol travel signs?

Decided to make a few villagers guards, only to find all of them way away from my settlement, picking fights with large bands of bandits. The only thing I could figure, was they were patrolling around the travel signs. I have made a 'signs' outpost for all of the travel signs, and they've begun to stick around town. It feels weird that the guards will roam halfway across the map to look at a single sign.

Also, why don't they man the guard posts?

The guard post is just a way to tell you how much incoming in the raid. You can use it as a shooting platform for yourself, but it doesn't really protect you from arrows. Just give you some elevation.

I'm at like 270 hours and have never once used a guard or needed one..

regardless they should not be wandering around freely.. they should be close to the outpost they are assigned to.. I've never seen a villager roam around and go check my signs lol..

They will go "guard" any building, including signs and fences, that are assigned to the same outpost as they are. Fences can be a pain because you can't see or change where they are assigned, so you always need to build them after another building th say can be set so you know for sure. But I also don't use guards. A villager set to "hold ground" works basically the same and they don't typically wander as far
