Economy model is poorly implemented
You can't sell anything. Merchants sell virtually nothing and they buy virtually nothing. As with many city building games, the idea behind trade equals a non-functioning economy. This coupled with a completely skewed system for upgrading skills, disproportionate requirements to reach new levels of proficiency, make for a needless grind.

as much as I could say it's a grind, it is, but for me it's fun.

I just read books as I research things, I read books as I do menial tasks, when I go into combat, I let my AI build up resources.

Killing bandits and you end up with skillbooks for days in the end, and money to buy stuff for, but there isn't really much need to buy a lot of stuff though. Once you liberated villages you can trade for the resources they produce as well.

You can buy skill books, if you can use them. E.G. if you're level 3 in a skill you can read a skill book to get to level 3. So, you need to level up in order to level up but can't level up because you don't have the skill to use the book to level up. And each level doubles the number you have to reach. Having liberated a village, they still don't have a market place that is realistic for trade. There's no making a silk purse out of a sow's ear no matter how many boars you kill. It's poorly designed and poorly executed. Perhaps an update will make things a little less absurd.

You use apprenetice books looted or bought in Haerndean before level 3. Once you are 3 you use Journeyman books bought from Padstow. The two tiers after that are loot only but pretty easy to farm

Farming bandits in the swamp is quite luxurious in that regard.

Books cost money to buy. Lots. Since you can't sell any surplus from your village to merchants, who only buy a few items--hence no real market economy--you can't buy much of anything. Taking on bandits is a quick way to die because you can't upgrade your stats. And so on. Grinding comes with the territory, but there ought to be some reasonable accommodation with reality, beginning with a functional market system that buys and sells more than a handful of items. Wandering merchants would be a nice addition.

There is a lot of small trades to be done around the map. Each trader in different villages buy different stuff. Herbalists buy stuff, fisherme does buy different stuff. Figure out who buy what and you can make a "trade loop" daily to sell stuff.

Killing bandits is what yield the best rewards. My friend and me made thousands just kill roaming bandit patrols. They keep spawning all the time. You need the renown to recruit new people as well, it goes hand in hand with make money. (and free skill books, straps etc).

May i very quickly remind that you, that this game indeed is an Early Acces title, and therefor not yet in a finished state?

I would really suggest you, to remformulate yourself, into something sounding more constructive, and then post it as a suggestion for the Dev's to see, and by doing so, marginally increasing the chances that the Dev's not only sees it, but also takes a second look at it :)

Mabye they are already, working on a rework or balancing, of the whole market mechanic ;) Instead of just writing the "ohh this market economy is stupid! Uhhh it dosent work! Uhhhh they should change "something" about it!"

On a very second note, have you noticed the state of the villages? They are very small, not as maintained as they should be, and not to mention the fact, that they are actually ocuppied by the Lord's soldiers, wich would definetly also have an impact on what and how much they can sell/buy ;) I do really like that they do not offer you the world to buy, since the game on that way, kinda forces you to become independent and selfsustaining ;)

Why is it some folks feel it's okay to nominate themselves as adjudicators on a forum that they are just another visitor to with an opinion that is not made superior because they delegate themselves as monitors and arbiters? I really needed to be reminded that the game is in early access. That's one of the reason i invested in it, along with dozens of others. If that wasn't sufficient, the game reminds you of this every time you log in. But thanks for clewing me in. It would be better if you tended your own rose garden.
