So ser sterling… i miss clicked the wrong thing and messed up the wandering knight quest, does he give you another chance to recruit him or do I have to go back to an earlier save??

You are much better off restoring a pre-mis-click save...

Since he's a pretty good fighter, you really "need" him now and not later.

I can not definitively answer this, as in my save I recruited Ser Sterling, however:

* He DOES reappear (after recruiting) in 200-300 game days
- By that time, you'll have long "finished" the game and really will not "need" him
- I have no idea if he is recruit-able again, as I didn't try

Your "best option" here would be to re-load a previous save if it's available.

Helpful Hint:
* There are a lot of dialogs in the game where a mis-click gets you into trouble...
Notably with completing game achievements - I had to re-play again to pick them up.
