Cutting v Piercing

Is a cutting axe a good weapon? I can build an axe (cutting) that does like 40 damage early in the game but later I can research and build a sword (piercing) that does like 30 damage. Is the 40 axe better than a 30 sword or is cutting just for trees and not good against soldiers?

I'm thinking that 40 axe is 2-hd and the sword is 1-hd but the best damage type is normally based on what you are fighting and when its npc's it comes down to the armor they are wearing. In my experience blunt damage has been the best all-rounder to use and i wouldn't worry about the attack length just the damage and speed. Reason i say length doesn't really matter is cause it only means anything if your chasing something not when your all clustered together as what normally happens in a fight. Also the reason the swords are normally less damage then the weapons with only one stat is cause they have both cutting and piercing. Also the thing with them having an axe as a weapon means they can and will use it to cut down trees when needed.

i think damage type wont matter,at least for now i experimented with cutting vs blunt to see if axe destroy shield quicker and it was same damage ,maybe 1-2 hits difference.
