Your dudes function poorly on just berries and mushrooms... To make the good food items, you need meat you get from hunting.
Imagine your dudes got 40/40 hitpoints/stamina with no food, and when you buff them with good food its like 200/200 (just simplified numbers to make an example).
I'm guessing the only way to hunt animals by bows and traps?
I hate there isn't any fishing mechanics no?
The game's short starting tutorial teaches you how to make traps. You can research a trapper hut, and assign villagers to do the trapping. Research tier 2, you can research Hunter Cabin, then villagers can hunt larger animals with bow.
Your initial food sources will be berries and mushroom. You can roast and later smoke mushrooms. Turn berries into berry jam etc.. You unlock more things by research.
Question though are you able to hunt animals with spears or bows figuring out whats in the game is all
There is no spears. You use bows, or your fists, or whatever you can hit with. Fighting a boar close range with a bow is no use, you need a melee weapon then.
Otherwise any advice for the smaller bunny animals ?
Use a bow.
