Any reason to use shield?

I am trying to play onehand + shield but they broke my shield in seconds its get better later?

I mean.. I personally don't do melee.. I use range but half my fighters have shields and they are absolute beasts with it.

Shields are good for Villagers, the T2 shield is good for you, they can take 350 damage before breaking, and take the bow slot, so after a while I went Bow, then melee if need

I explicitly used a shield, equipped all my melee villagers with it.
Better shields last longer, as you progress you will unlock them.
Shields are good for omnidirectional blocking and are best for dealing with archers. Those arrows hit hard.

Once you get good with your bow and tier 3 arrows you can kill most groups solo so most of the time my companions carry best shield and weapon available and I snipe.
