No it "MUST" not be present simply because the devs said it was co-op.. co-op does not instantly equate to servers.. co-op means that you have the capability to play co-op which hosting does provide. Dedicated servers is more of a wish-list item and the devs already said they would look into it. We should be happy they have co-op at all because if they didn't the same people would be complaining about that.
But there are servers because whoever is hosting is running a listen server so they just need to make that headless and a few other changes.
my friends will often want to login and progress while I'm not online, having a single save and trying to share it would get messy.
No dedicated servers? Not interested. Perhaps when you get them up and running, but it concerns me that if they are retro-fitted, then the network code will be rubbish. It needed to be built with multiplayer and dedicated servers in mind
