Once you place the bell tower the entire village guards will go hostile. Unprepared they will kill you fast and you will have a hard time getting your gear back in time.
Be warned though, after receiving the quest the town would go into rebelling mode, making all the brigands guarding the town go hostile.
Contrary to what Killer 26 says, none of the villagers would help you battling brigands.
After beating all the brigands (6 in Haerdean), you will get the quest of researching & building a belltower. While doing this the brigands will constantly send out a tax collacting squad, whom you need to fight off. You can just skip all this by just building the belltower at the village,
After finishing the belltower, a large number(10)of brigands will be sent from their HQ to retake the village. Only after you defeat every single one of them would you be able to liberate the village.
I strongly recommend that you finish the research of the belltower and store the resources to build it. The time during the building of the belltower would be the most difficult. Until you finish building it, you will be constantly be attacked both from brigands and bandits. Unlike bandits who would go for your treasure, the brigands would go for the village, If one of them reaches the village the rebellion has failed and you will need to build the trust with the town again.
Brigands are no joke either, unlike bandits they're fully decked with tier2 armor & weapons.
