Level 1 Axe

I just researched and built my first level 1 axe, the one a level higher than the basic beginner axe. It doesn't seem like I can cut any new trees, and the usual trees take just as many chops. Is the only benefit over the rudimentary axe in combat? I thought it was categorized as a tool. There doesn't seem to be any hint in the game.

rugged axe is the next tier for chopping next tier tree.

I think it's more durable and does more damage to enemies. The next tier are for trees you don't get until you build the village hall.

tried using a battle axe on a tree welp there goes my imagination.
