cords and rope are easily crafted at weaver station.
Reeds (tall plants) are found around lakes.
Straps can be bought for 75g and can eventually be made in tier 2. You'll need 15 to build the village hall first.

There are 2 roads heading east/southeast from the first village (a small road north, a big road south for the pair). Follow the small road and it leads you to a vendor who sells 1 strap a day for 75g. There are a couple of wolves on the road. As a bonus, you pass a river just before him and there are tons of reeds there.

There are 2 big roads going south/southwest from the starter village down toward Padslow (the 2nd village you get quests to visit). follow the western of these roads. In a big field on your left (east side) there is another merchant who sells 1 strap a day.

Both merchants will buy simple cords for 10g each (how many they buy each day will vary).

The merchant in the 1st village will buy reeds for 10g each (amount they buy also varies by day). He will also buy 1 simple axe for 25g (needs to be full durability).

For the bandits, try using a bow. Bring a villager with a shield and club equipped with you (or try using a shield yourself, although 2+ bandits will be hard to melee; with a shield you can hold the block, and it will block all frontal attacks but take damage doing so and can completely break). Look for the road patrols (typically 2 bandits; look down around Padslow and there will be frequent patrols). If you are alone and using the bow, know that bandits do not climb. Standing on one side of a fence, they will path around to reach you (for melee bandits that is. Avoid archers if you are using a bow yourself as you need to more to avoid getting hit but need to stand still to shoot). Shoot while they do, then jump over the fence/wall when they get close. Aim for headshots (early bandits should die from 1 shot to the head). Be aware aiming takes stamina so try not to run out (you will need stamina to jump the fence).

And eat 3 different types of food - that is where most of your health and stamina will come from. plants give more stamina, meat more health. Also, the only food in the 1st slot decays (as it ends, the other foods shift over), so eat something you can carry a few of first, then the more rare foods and remember to eat more before it completely wears off.
