also, how am I supposed to be able to research the belltower if I have to liberate first?
Yes on the Advanced Research desk look near the top of the display screen that comes up. It will show an Apprentice Profession that is required.
I now see the "profession" section on the research desk, but I was trying to get them to research the barn, which doesnt even have a profession requirement and they still wouldnt research it.

I didnt have any problems with the Barn or the Bell tower research. Not sure why they wont research Barn for you.
For the Belltower, it was tied to a quest with the starter town, and again was researched with no issues.
Basically you get the quest to discuss with the village elder, then the belltower is unlocked as a research item, once researched, you can talk to the elder again and it triggers the town going into rebellion, and the garrison attacks you. If you defeat them, you can then build the Belltower within the town limits and once built it triggers an assault from the Brigand Headquarters. This is where my game ended as I got wiped out and so started again with a new playthrough.
Ah, so perhaps the T3 stuff is unlocked through quest as well then?

With those apprentices you are able to research all stuff.
You can start the liberation when you trust is protector+, then you have to speak with an elder to trigger the liberation by killing all brigands/guards, after that you have to buile Village Belltower improvement and that triggers the final wave of brigands. You need to have around 10 fighters to be able to deal with such wave and guards as well, they are tougher and tougher as you liberated more and more villages and not sure if time in days affects that as well.
