What is the point of the Outhouse?
Unless i'm just not noticing, it doesn't look like the outhose actually recycles or returns any of the materials used to make the items to me. It just "destroys" them.

Well I can just litter crap on the ground out in the middle of nowhere, go adventuring, and by the time I pass back back that way again, the items are deleted. Like the litter fairy just sprinkle dusted them away for me.

So what's the point of an Outhouse? Is it actually recycling the items and i'm just not noticing somehow? Are my villagers magically teleporting thins straight from the outhouse to storage?

What purpose does this building serve?

I thought the outhouse was for getting rid of items you don't need.

some items aren't left alone by your followers and they might pick it up

Yes. But you can literally just drag things out of your inventory on the ground and in a minute or two they'll delete themselves.

If you do it in your settlement your villagers will pick it up so that's annoying.

But do it in the middle of nowhere and the game just deletes it for you in a few minutes. I used to think you had to go certain distance away first but I've had it happen where I dropped something on the ground then went to my kitchen for a snack and by the time I returned the things I dropped were gone.

There's at least one research recipe you need rotten food for actually, so don't be too quick to discard everything

It deletes items, particularly smoked mushrooms quickly. If you have hundreds (max I had was 373) at a last count it’s not practical to run outside of villager range to dispose. If you don’t, they get picked straight backup by your overzealous subordinates. For the cost it’s cheap and convenient (when not bugged).

Also, why would you want to run around with full pockets? Tasty game abounds to fill your inventory

Rotten food, or burnt food, needed for fertilizer for the farms.
